Farmingdale is very different from Merrick, although I LOVE the historic homes N or Main Street in the town.....I'm not a fan of the School District.

I grew up there. I think its a great town. there are iffy areas near the train station though. Not sure why the SD gets a bad rap - they offer AP classes in the HS, College Credit from CW Post, great music, art and sports.

DH and I bought a house there last January and couldnt be happier. We are in a 1937 home in the village and love the community feeling of our area.

We just bought a house there. It's in South Farmingdale.
We were originally looking in Merrick, Bellmore and Wantagh. A realtor showed me that house and I fell in love with it. The area is great too...

Have lived in Farmingdale my whole life. School district is good education wise. Like all other areas the kids are little punks. I agree- don't live too close to the train station. Otherwise I love it and hope to buy a house here some day!!

I have a co-worker that lives in Farmingdale. She has two kids, they are very involved in sports & she LOVES the district.

We moved here over the summer, to South Farmingdale, we love it! We researched the SD before buying and it was rated very well. I love the area!

I went to Plainedge, but most of my friends were from Farmingdale. I think some of the reason people that do not live in the area give the school a bad rep is because of the racial riots many years ago. For some reason that image sticks. Nevermind the winning sports teams, or the students who go to all-state for music..... 
Just like any other school on LI, you will have your good students & your little punks. I think it is a good district & they offer a lot of academic & sports & arts.
ETA: I would move there.

I agree with the PP.
I went to school there from 96-2000 and I never saw a race riot -
I think people look at the district negatively sometimes because it is more diverse than the surrounding districts

I am old, the riots were in the very early 90's. I think it may have even been the late 80's
