UltraSCREEN?
OK another question - how is the ultrascreen different from the ultrasound? I already did the blood samples (ha should have waited until I cut myself for real!), and I go on the 20th to NSUH for the screening. Is the procedure the same? Internal or external? I will be just about 13w4d. Will they be able to tell the sex?

Re: UltraSCREEN?
When I had mine it was an external sonogram. They measure the baby from different angles and measure the neck. It took about 15-20 minutes.

Thanks - I know what it is FOR, just not sure what they DO and what else they can see...

It is possible to tell the sex, although most techs won't tell you. I had mine two weeks ago and it was awesome. It was external and then they took blood. My DH came and it was the first time he saw the baby and we both really enjoyed it.

Re: UltraSCREEN?
It is an external sono combined with bloodwork. All you have to do for this one is give them your finger to prick and undo your pants. I was told as NSUH, and assume this is probably the same everywhere, that the machine they use for the Ultrascreen has a much higher clarity than their other sono machines. You can see more detail. Also, it was displayed for us up on a bigger TV monitor, instead of just on the small machine screen.

Re: UltraSCREEN?
This ultrascreen, they measure the neck folds as well as some other parts. This test is mostly for downs syndrome. And this along with the finger prick test determines the chances of downs in your child (1 in 5,000; 1 in 20,000, etc.). They do not tell you whether or not downs is detected. Based on these results, your dr. will then determine whether you should get an amnio to determine if downs or anything else is present.
The AFP, which you will be given at around 16 weeks (I think) tests for downs as well as spina bfida and other neurological defects. These results will tell you whether downs or anything esle was detected.
None of these tests are mandatory. There are pluses and minuses to both. And, it is strictly a personal decision whether you choose to have these tests.

Re: UltraSCREEN?
Thanks!! I have decided so far to do the ultrascreen only. I guess we will see what comes up and then decide if we want further testing.
DH is NOT going with me -- does he need to??? ETA - he has been to 2 Dr. visits and seen the baby and heartbeat with me...

Re: UltraSCREEN?
I had mine done at NSUH as well. The one in Manhasset. As other people stated, it's an external ultrasound/sonogram and usually a fingerprick blood test. It's actually pretty amazing. I only brought my Mom but looking back I wish I had brought DH as well. Mainly because you can see the baby tumbling around and everything in more detail. I also heard the heartbeat for the first time! It's pretty amazing. They were also able to make a guess that it was a boy (I was 12 weeks at the time) and they were right (I found out for sure at my Level II at 20 weeks). Hope this helps!
ETS: The term ultrasound and sonogram are often used interchangibly. They essentially mean the same thing. The UltraScreen is the term used for this specific test.

DH does NOT need to go with you. If he can that's great, but if not it's not a big deal. Actually, the only thing that DH has come to with me was the Level II. It is difficult for him to take off of work every time I have to go to the doctor. So, don't worry, you'll be OK on your own

He doesn't need to be there, but personally, I'm really glad my DH came. Besides my very first doctor visit and sono, it's the only other appointment he came too. I've had lots of sonos and this one was by far the best. It was really detailed and the baby was so active and we got to see him/her jumping all over the place on the big screen.
PS If you want to see an active baby, I hear drinking chocolate milk before you go keeps the little one awake. My friend went for hers and the baby was sleeping and they couldn't get it to turn to get the measurements they wanted (this was at her level II).

Re: UltraSCREEN?
I thought the blood test and the sono had to be done close together so you get an accurate reading on levels in your blood and the measurement of skin.
