Those with Fireplaces- Need your help

Whenever we make a fire in our fireplace, our house stinks to high heaven for days afterwards.
It doesn't smell much while we are burning it, and it's fine that day, but the next day, the house stinks so bad- almost as if we had some kind of major fire in our house- it smells like charred ashes!

We have tried everything- closing the flue afterwards, leaving it open afterwards, we always clean all the ashes out immediately, we have tried different kinds of wood, keeping the fireplace doors shut afterwards, we have used that Chimney Sweeping Log. Everything! Nothing works.

We made a fire yesterday and the house was fine this morning- but when I came home from work tonight,my house stunk so bad I couldn't even stand to be in it. It was giving me such a bad headache- I swear I could taste the acrid burning stench in my mouth. I had to open all the windows- even though I was freezing- because I seriously felt like I was going to be ill.

Something is not right. Has anyone experience this? Any advice?
Thanks in advance! Chat Icon

We experience it every year. We love our fireplace.....but the next day is just horrible.

The more "smokey" the fireplace, the worse it will be. For example, wet/damp wood will cause this.

I'd love to read any remedies for this.

We usually experience that when there's a change in air pressure/weather.

When was the last time you had it inspected or cleaned?

Do you have a chimney cap? So many people don't and lots of living (or once living) and non-living things can get stuck in the chimneyChat Icon

Does the flue go straight up? One of our fireplaces has a curved flue... we only found this out after the chimney company came. He said we might not be able to get a good fire going and some of it might back up into the room.

We had one going onn Saturday night and I could smell it again on Sunday morning but I don't think I smell anything now. We only use the Duraflame "natural" logs.

If you've tried everything you can think of I'd call in the professionals for an inspection.

We had it inspected last year- and they said it was clean- they didn't even bother to clean it - they were honest enough to say we didn't need it.
I dont' know though- I think I need another opinion this year. That stench was like nothing I have ever experienced. I think I will call another company this year.
I'm also not sure if the flue is curved- but that might be a possiblity because we do sometimes have trouble getting good fires going.
Thanks for the advice! I'll check into all of it! Chat Icon

when do you close the flue? before you go to bed or the next day? Could the coal bed still possibly be burning after you close the flue???

We tried leaving it open until at least the next day for that very reason.
There doesn't seem to be much of a rhyme or reason to it.
It's just so bizzare

Re: Those with Fireplaces- Need your help

We notice it occasionally but not real bad. It seems to be the way the winds are blowing, creating a backdraft down the chimney. You could look into getting one of those chimney caps that close down to seal the chimney (instead of the hoods that just block rain). Glass doors over the fireplace instead of a screen might help too.
