Just got back from the pediatrician

I had posted last night about Maddie having blood in her poop and it looks like she does have a milk allergy. I have to stop breastfeeding for a week while I go on a dairy free diet and give her alimentum formula. I got so upset when the ped told me I had to stop bf (I was tearing up while I was leaving the office)and I feel silly that I got so upset. I'm determined to start bf her again so I am going to do my best to stick to a dairy free diet. I love my milk and cheese so any alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

I was diary free for 8 months and it was hard but doable. I am also a vegetarian so it really limited my food, but I was able to do it.

I used soy milk for cereal and in foods that needed milk. Tofutti makes sour cream, cream cheese and cheese that were pretty good. There is alos a vegan butter that was excellent. (I think it was Earth's Balance) If you shop at Trader Joe's you will find some stuff as well as at a health food store.

Once you get a handle on what you can and can not eat it is much easier.

I was sad to have to stop bf because of this also so I totally understand. But in the end it was for the best for us. Be careful of soy in your diet also (I eat alot of soy) bc kids who are allergic to milk protein 50% of the time are also allergic to soy. Good luck!!

First off, 's to you.

I had to switch over to soy stuff while preggo , milk products gave me heartburn. Here are my tips...

Earth's Balance butter is AWESOME!

I also like the "lite & Less" Brand "Parmesan chesse" it comes in a green container and tastes like the real thing!

Silk soy milk has a ton of sugar in it, go for the soy dream instead. Soy dream has great ice cream pops too!

YoSoy (Stoneyfield farms) soy ypogurt is great too!

I was dairy free for a few months, but now I'm just dairy limited. ds never had blood in his stool though, just bad eczema so i didn't have to stop bfing. but i did have to throw out all of the milk i had saved in the freezer. My ped said the same thing about the milk and soy allergies so I cut out all soy products too. I drink rice milk, but there's not many alternatives if you have to cut out both. I was in your shoes but I pumped like crazy while we had to do the trial of dairy free and we were able to go back to BFing.

oh, I really feel for you. i would be so upset too. hang in there- you'll make it through. DD also has blood in her poop so i'm nervous about a similar diagnosis. did they do a blood test to diagnose your child?

I really don't have much advise on changing the diet, but just wanted to give some hugs. I know what its like to have a child with a milk protein allergy.
