rice cereal
Our twins are 5 weeks old and some people recommended starting them on rice cereal at night to get them to sleep longer. I asked the pediatrician and he said there is no need for it yet since they are both gaining really well. When do most babies start the rice cereal? I need a good night sleep!

Re: rice cereal
We didn't start cereal until 4 months.
JMO, but you shouldn't give them cereal for the sole purpose of getting them to sleep through the night because it probably won't work. They will sleep through when they are neurologically ready...it really doesn't have much to do with having a full belly.
I think there are a few mommies on here that can tell you they tried giving cereal early for that reason and it didn't work.
I think the possible negative consequences of starting solids (increased chances for food allergies, digestive problems if their delicate systems aren't ready for it) too early outweigh the possible benefits...if there are any.
As for sleeping through the night, hang in there - we've all be through it.

Re: rice cereal
James is 7 weeks and is not sleeping too long at night either. My mom and MIL keep telling me to try cereal, it worked for us when we were babies. I'm sure the ped will say no, but if he's still like this when I go back to work, I may try it. I don't know. Good luck to you.

Re: rice cereal
We started at 4.5 months and I agree with previous posters that starting this early would probably not help.

Re: rice cereal
Per my docotor we started at 3 months because my son was ready.
I must agree with BabyAvacado... full bellies does not equal a nights sleep. It took Michael another full month to start going through the night. Hang in there!! We've all been there!!!

Re: rice cereal
From what I understand from our pediatrician, the reason the ped recommends waiting until 4 months is because babies have a reflex where they push things out of their mouths with their tongues and this reflex stops at around 4 months.

Re: rice cereal
I started my son at 4 months on rice cereal and my daughter at 5.5 months.
Cereal had nothing to do with their sleeping through the night. They both did that at 2-3 months, long before they ever got cereal.
