Mileage tax

What are your thoughts as a car dependent area? How about those of you who have an electric / hybrid vehicle to avoid gas taxes and may now have to pay a mileage tax?

I hope it doesn’t happen. The mileage we do between work and bringing the kids all over is insane, we’re about 2,500 - 3,000 miles a month with two cars!

Just another hit to suburban middle class families.

Mileage tax

If they add it on top of the existing gas taxes, it's not good. If they take out the equivalent taxes from the gas, and just move it over to a mileage tax, then I'm fine with it. I don't expect to see any government remove taxes from anything that is currently in place, though. The federal government charges a tax of 18.4 cents on every gallon of gasoline and 24.4 cents on every gallon of diesel.

Electric cars put wear and tear on the roads, too, so it's only fair that they help to pay for the maintenance of the roads.

What is the proposed mileage tax amount? Curious the difference that I’d be paying

I haven't seen any numbers yet. Only that it's "on the table", but who knows what that means...

Re: Mileage tax

And how exactly would this be monitored? They are going to track our every move now?

So I have to drive for work and I get reimbursed for my mileage. Who would be responsible under this scenario?

I know that when you get your car inspected they record the mileage. So probably via that.

Every gallon of gas has a Federal and State tax, so currently, your company pays those taxes if it pays for your gas. It would probably be the same.

So this tax would be added to gas prices? They don't pay for gas but I get a certain payout per cents mile driven.

Like Goldernrod said, I would support if if they then took away the taxes on gas. Mileage tax would help to even out the costs by including electric and hybrids. If they don't adjust the tax on gas; it's a double tax on those with gas cars and an added tax on those that work.
