If your DC does not finish his cereal...

Ok so I started him on cereal again yesterday. I did the teaspoon, figured I'd start slow. This morning I wanted to try giving him a tablespoon again. So I took a 6oz bottle and took an ounce out for the cereal cuz that's recommended for the first few times. He didn't want to finish. When he's hungry he just wants his bottle and that's it. Now since he didn't finish his cereal does it mean that he had a 5oz bottle only? I would say he had close to have of the cereal.

First of all, I would not offer him cereal first. I'd give him his full 6oz. bottle THEN make the cereal using extra formula that you've prepared. Cereal does not replace formula, it supplements it.

But I could have sworn the doctor said I could take the milk from his prepared bottle, and to give cereal first.

Re: If your DC does not finish his cereal...

I give a bottle first, then cereal like a half hour later. I also mix a little fruit in her cereal (like pears or apples). My ped told me that you are not supposed to mix fruit w/cereal because then she won't eat the cereal on its own, yadda, yadda. BUT, DD will not eat cereal any w/o the fruit in it. I have come to realize that doctors don't know EVERYTHING and they don't know my DD better than me, so I give her the fruit mixed with the cereal and she loves it. She eats and I don't have a screaming baby. So it is win/win. Gracie is in the 20% percentile for her weight and 50% for her height, so I am not worried and the ped was not worried eighter.

I think if he ate half of the cereal that is great! He will work up to eating more, them more you feed him the cereal. Don't worry, sweetie. Chat Icon

Should I continue taking the milk from her bottle?

Re: If your DC does not finish his cereal...

I would never take the formula from the bottle because, to me, that is the most important source of her nutrition, and anything ontop of that is extra. So if you are using extra formula to make his cereal, then you have the peace of mind to know that he took his whole bottle and all that formula in the cereal is just an extra benefit.
That being said, I make Ava's cereal with water and pear juice becuase the formula constipates her and I do not want her taking in anymore formula than necessary.

I make 8 ounces and DD drinks 6, then I take the 2 left over ounces and mix it in her cereal with 3 spoonfuls of fruit. HTH Chat Icon

But shouldn't you do cereal first. Doesn't it wash it down.

And do you have to burp them after they have cereal?

I don't make it so thick that she would need to wash it down. It is thicker than formula, but still watery.

She lets me know if she has to burp because she starts squirming around in her highchair.

I totally agree with this. If I gave Stephanos cereal first he would NEVER take his bottle. Also, I would give him a full bottle then make the cereal with additional formula.

DS takes between 7.5 - 8 oz per feeding...
I give him about 5 oz from the bottle to calm him. Mix about 1.5oz with the cereal. Give that to him and then let him finished what's left in the bottle...

It makes it a little easier and he is a lot calmer when he eats the cereal...

I always burp him after...

You need to do what YOU think is best. Every mommy is different.
Like above - these mommies give the bottle first. I on the other hand do not. You have to test out different things to see what works for YOU and YOUR baby.

Let me do some research for you to see if there is a book (or books) you can read to help you along with this.

Burping Ali does pretty much on her own so I can't give you advice on that.

I give him his cereal first and take 2-3 oz. from his bottle which is 8oz and once he finishs the cereal I usually wait about 15 minutes (sometiems I dont wait) and I give him his bottle and he finishes it. In my mind he is still getting his 8oz just in 2 forms. Plus he still drinks over 32oz a day just from the bottle so that is why I am not to concerned about that. If he was eating less that 32oz I would probably give him the bottle first then try the cereal. I would call the doctor and see what his says. Did you ask any of your friends? I asked my SIL and that is how she did but I am going to the dr. today so I can also ask for you but I wont be home till late.

Re: If your DC does not finish his cereal...

What I did was stop the cereal and gave him 4 ounces. After that he burped and I tried to give him the rest of the cereal which he took but then didn't want to finish. It's like he wants to suck on a bottle and that's it. Cuz then when I went to give him the rest of the bottle he took it. Could it also be that the cereal gets too cold for him where he loosed interest in eating it?

Oh thank you so much! Yeah see what your doctor says. Mine said do the cereal first. He's having 24 ounces a day sometimes 30 is that enough?

Yes she's right. Try it both ways and see how it goes and then decide which is best for you son.

Like yours, my doctor said cereal first and make it from the prepared bottle. I didn't give it to Sarah at her first bottle of the day, I did it for her second.
