Mouse in restaurant?

So there is one place that serves Short Ribs here (my favorite cut!) and I treat myself a few times a year for it. I can’t get it at a butcher because they don’t really do that cut here and I have to special order it.

Anyway the restaurant is very nice, in the heart of the city, and very well-known. I went yesterday after work to relax and read and have a nice meal. I love going to restaurants alone.

Then when I was finished and digesting, I saw a little gray mouse run across the floor of the dining room. The table next to me saw it, too, but they didn’t seem to be bothered with it and said he was harmless. Hello?! Then it ran back across the floor and I told the waitress. She was like sometimes they get in when people walk in the door. Uh, yeah, no.

I know restaurants/food places have critters in them, but I don’t want to see them. IMO, when you see them, then the infestation is pretty bad.

Would you go back to the restaurant?

Yeah, I'd be pretty disgusted and would not go back. If a mouse is brazen enough to be running past people in that kind of setting, I'd bet there are MANY of them. Any experience I've had with mice, they only came out at night and were never seen. Mice leave a ton of droppings that can carry disease.

Exactly. If you see one out and brazen like that, then that’s a problem. I had mice as pets when I was a child, and I know how they act. My family also had a mouse in the house once or twice. But they were too scared to come out.

I see the mice sometimes in the subway stations here, but not that much. I think this mouse was also a baby mouse, which makes things worse.

They did move to a new location, and there is a lot of construction going on in the area. That’s probably why they are there.

Oh man I have an irrational fear of mice and rats and I would've freaked the F out! No way I'd be able to go back. Not sure how it works where you are but can it be reported someplace? I know here in the city it can be.

A few weeks ago I was leaving an apt building here in the city and a rat ran past me on the sidewalk. I can not leave that building now without looking both ways before I step outside.

I’m looking into somewhere I can report them to. I don’t mind mice (had them as pets) and I actually think they are cute. But I don’t want them by my food! Rats freak me out.

It’s a shame because it’s a really great restaurant and very well-known. I’ve been going there for years.

The restaurant needs a cat. That’s kind of normal here.

Negative! lol
Years ago when my daughter was about 7-8 yrs old. My brother took her shopping for my birthday. She thought it would be a great idea to get me a mouse as a gift. I wouldn't even open the box. Just the way she was holding it and giggling I knew what it was. I made them take it back. Chat Icon

And yes a cat would be great investment for them.

I wouldn’t because of the thought of the mouse droppings. I will say I used to work at a retail store and occasionally we would have a mouse or 2, and I did see one scoot under the door from outside. But still would not be able to eat there after seeing that...

I owned a store and luckily we never got mice but the exterminator told me that mice go inside for the warmth to mate. They are not usually there because of uncleanliness. They can also get in thru holes the size of a dime, sometimes even smaller. Mice can be hard to avoid in the colder months. I actually have had many mice in my basement and attic and a couple that got caught in the walls!

All of that being said, I don't think that I would be able to go back there.

Ugh, yeah. We've had mice come in the past week with the bitter cold. They can come in through ANYWHERE. It's ridiculous. We set the humane traps and caught and released two this week. The only place we've seen droppings is by the dog's dishes since she's a messy eater and leaves some kibble out for them to munch on. That's where we've caught them, too. We have had issues with them in the past though so we have a lot of airtight plastic bins in our pantry for cereal, chips, cookies, pasta, whatever comes in a package that can't be easily resealed.

I did work in a bagel store and it was VERY clean and we still had an occasional mouse. Honestly, it wouldn't bother me too much. Chat Icon

I think you would be hard pressed to find any restaurant/food establishment that didn't have bugs or vermin at some point. One mouse isn't that big of a deal to me.

Yes, but what bothers me is their presence during the day with many people around. Usually that means there is a huge infestation.
