super quick federal jury duty question

I have to report to federal jury duty on Monday. I know I can't bring my phone, but can I bring my kindle (not the fire - just a regular e-reader)? If not, I will run to the library and take out a book. I can't find the answer online.

TIA

It's been a while, but I do not think you can bring it in because it is an electronic device.

ugh- thanks. I just started a really good book and was hoping to sit at jury duty and read for a bit.

Oh well - I will stop at the library and pick up a real book.

Well, if you can figure this out...

Electronic devices in Federal Court House - Rules

I don't think a Kindle would be considered an electronic device based on this, but it's not very clear and very well could be. And, as a juror, you can bring your phone in, but cannot use it at all

You can bring an e-reader. I served federal GJ in Bklyn for 5 months in 2017. They encouraged us to bring something to occupy our time because you often had downtime while waiting for a witness to appear or in between witnesses.
It's true that you have to surrender your cell phone but we were allowed to bring e-readers and laptops. There was wifi info in our grand jury room but I don't remember if there was wifi info in the jury assembly room (where you first report).

I'm not sure if there are different rules in different courts but in Bklyn, you most definitely had to surrender your cell phone once you passed through the metal detectors.

This makes me so happy! I will stop and pick up a real book just in case and leave it in my bag but will bring the kindle in. I have to report to CI so I can leave the kindle in the car if it's not allowed. I know for state supreme I can bring in my phone (I go frequently for work and always have it), but for federal it's a no-no.

Thanks everyone!

You can get your phone whenever you leave - if you go out for lunch or something.
They have these carts with small boxes that are numbered and they give you a "claim ticket" of sorts (was usually a small piece of wood with the number on it) and the carts are rolled into a room right near the entrance, behind security. Security is pretty tight so I don't think anyone would be walking off with someone's cell phone.

Speaking of tight security, be happy you weren't selected a few weeks ago or you could be sitting on El Chappo's jury. Chat Icon

Lol yes, but I've never had to be a parent without a cell phone fortunately. My mom did though!
