PSA: come up with a family code word!
A little girl avoided a kidnapphing by asking for the code word when the man told her she needed to come with him Bc her brother was in a serious accident.

I had one as a child and used it. Turned out just to be a nice neighbor that I didn't know offering me a ride home in a snowstorm, but it worked for me.

The thing is too, why would parents EVER send a complete stranger to come get their kid?
Even if someone were in an accident, or there was some kind of emergency, you would send a family member or trusted friend...someone your child knows.
I think that's the other thing you have to teach your kids.

PSA: come up with a family code word!
Code words have been used by my kids for a variety of different reasons. As a tween/teen, my daughter has had to use it a few times. Our arrangement was that if she were ever in an uncomfortable situation, she could text me the code word and then I would call her and tell her she needed to come home for "whatever reason". She's used it at gatherings where kids are drinking/smoking pot and she just didn't want to be around it.
So yes, code words are a great thing for kids!

Yes— you have to make that SUPER clear to your kids because I don’t think a young child would rationalize the situation. If my daughter thought one of her siblings was hurt or sick she would jump into the car without thinking. It’s terrifying.

I think that’s probably the case for many people, but for my family, we live in a state where we have no family and while we have some friends who my kids know, they don’t know all of them or even co-workers etc. So we have gone over with my kids the few people who we would try and send, God forbid there’s an emergency, but have also let them know a code word, in case we had to send somebody else if we couldn’t reach other people.
