Thompson Family owned Shoprite...
Does anyone shop at these locations? I believe its only deer park, uniondale, and now Riverhead. Im just wondering how they differ from a standard "shoprite" grocery store...

I shop at the Uniondale one, I’ve never shopped at another location so I don’t know the difference.

Re: Thompson Family owned Shoprite...
Two things I can think of...
1. They play retro music all day long.
2. Owners are receptive to allowing special education students to participate in vocational internships at their stores. I have been assigned to that "worksite" with my class a few times.

That's nice! I just met with my son's job coach the other day, and told her about the Shoprite opening near us. She said if it's owned by a certain family (not the one mentioned here), they set the bar so high in applying that they know the special needs population can't pass the tests they require. I was disappointed to hear that!

I'm guessing the Janson's stores. Uggh, that's so disappointing. I've shopped at one of their stores exclusively for years and could complete my weekly shopping in my sleep at this point but that sounds like the second nail in the coffin for me. I really need to try to switch to a different store.

I honestly really don't know the name! But it wasn't one of these locations mentioned.
My son has had a job coach for a year, and she has yet to be able to find him a job. I'm finding that many places are NOT open to hiring someone with special needs. Which is a shame. He really wants to be a "Page" at the library, as he loves to read books. These are usually jobs that hire high school kids (he graduated last year). I've seen the kids that do this job at our local library, and they are chatting it up the entire time! My son is so quiet, he would just do his job and it's 2 for the price of 1 with him since his coach would be there helping also. But, out of the half dozen libraries they have applied to, nothing. Discouraging for sure! Sorry to take over your Shoprite post OP

I shop at the Shoprite in Uniondale, which is Thompson family owned, and the one in Bethpage, which is not. I really find very little difference between them. The Thompson one in Uniondale does have a pharmacy though, and they are really nice and helpful there.

Same. I shop at both. The stores themselves are pretty similar. I just hate the Uniondale parking lost SO MUCH.
