Tax relief credits?

This would be the second check I'm getting. Ours came no problem last year, so I'm assuming this year would be no issue either.

Tax relief credits?

can i ask a dumb question? I got a check in the mail, but it said it was a property tax relief credit. is that the same as the school tax relief credit? It said it was a certain percentage of my STAR tax savings. I didn't know this had something to do with my school tax though? Are there two different checks that we should be getting?

I got mine last Saturday! The amount varies based on income and your STAR Savings. Next year will be a big one and the last one!

Tax relief credits?

The Property Tax Relief check is the check we get for our school districts staying under the 2% tax cap.

The STAR check you get is only if you bought your house after 2015. It is the STAR savings that you receive back in a rebate form instead of off the top like those who bought prior to 2015.

oh thank you for clarifying this- I bought in 2014 so our STAR savings is part of our regular tax amount. So the check I received is the one being talked about in the OP, and is the only check I should be expecting.

It is based on a very vague and complicated formula. To qualify, your school budget needed to pass within the cap. Your tax reduction or grieved amount cannot exceed a certain percentage, then they calculate it based on a percentage of STAR benefits related to your income on a sliding scale.
Some people do not qualify for the property tax relief check.
translation: nobody knows

But it does have to do with both STAR and school taxes.

its on the website. It is based on how much money you make and how much you STAR savings our.

So for this year it was based on your income from 2016:

Percentage of Basic STAR savings according to income
If your 2016 income is: Your 2018 property tax relief credit will be this percentage of your STAR savings:
$75,000 or less 60.0%
between $75,000 and $150,000 42.5%
between $150,000 and $200,000 25.0%
between $200,000 and $275,000 7.5%

so basically if you (meaning you and your spouse combined if you are married) made less than $750000 you got 60% back of what your Basic STAR savings.

Next year you will receive a lot more money because they are increasing the percentage everyone gets back but it will be the last year.

I just went to the site to get the info. I was so confused based on what other people in my family were getting back. Turns out I just made too much. Damn! lol
