the obligatory spinoff... because, it's me

the buggy.

the buggy replica came to be when i was putting cake ideas together. through a lot of re-hashing the idea, i ended on a two-tier cake. the lower tier would be "Raiders"... he's a big fan (not a happy fan, but a true fan). the top tier would be uneven and a sandy brown to look like the desert (where we ride the buggy). i would even have the lower level "beat up" by the buggy. make it look like the buggy is crawling up the cake, the way the real thing is driven out in the middle of nowhere.

awesome.

but...

the guy who finished the buggy for me wants to put it in that case (the acrylic top is a sample, mine won't be scratched up).

if i put it in the case, the entire cake idea is out the window. i was planning that the cake would "make an entrance" and that would be part of the surprise/presentation of the buggy.

i talked to the 3D guy last night. he said to imagine the buggy is made of porcelain. if it's dropped, it will break.

question to you all...

would you still move ahead with Plan A (which really was Plan C) and put the buggy on the cake and THEN encase it.

or

would you not risk it. put the buggy in the case and decide on Plan D, E, F... for the cake design and the presentation of the buggy.

yes, i'm that crazy nervous person. i didn't sleep last night thinking about this.

what say you?

If it's 3D printed, it's extruded plastic. Every 3D printed item I've ever seen is pretty sturdy, and can easily handle being on top of a cake, and rinsed off afterwards. It's definitely not like porcelain.

I definitely like the idea of having the buggy "in it's element". That's what I would absolutely do with it if I was in your shoes.

I would keep it as a cake top.

I'd definitely want it ON the cake. I can't imagine it's THAT breakable. As soon as it comes off the cake, you can rinse it and put it in the case, it's not like you're suggesting rolling it down the street.

I would have a wood platform on the cake, so the buggy does not get dirty. Have the case on the side, take the photos, and then put it in the case.

in 60 days!!

Saturday, December 15.

invitations are ready to go. i'll be mailing them on halloween.

i only have one diy project to go (it's about 40% completed), and i have to finalize the menu.

then, it's just a matter of finding shoes to match my new party dress.

and then, you poor people won't have to put up with me talking about this. i feel bad that i've bombarded you with this... but it's not like i can talk about it at home... poor me Chat Icon Chat Icon

here's a thought.. how heavy/big is the buggy?
that's what would concern me more than anything - i imagine it crushing the top of the cake

eta: i just saw the pics you posted of it. Honestly, if you drop it, i'd be worried that it would break because of the smaller/thinner elements on it. I do see the vendor's concern about it. If you can secure it to the top of the cake well enough that it doesn't move, then maybe it would be ok?

I haven't seen it personally, but just knowing about 3D printed stuff, and the size of the buggy, I can't picture it crushing a cake. Even angel food cake should be able to support that. The bottom layer of a cake has to support a lot more weight than the car.

Anything *can* break if dropped. Even if it's in the case, if it's dropped, it could still break. It could even be worse if it's in the case if it fell, since it's now surrounded by 6 very hard sides. If it's not in the case, there's a chance it wouldn't land on something hard.

i showed a coworker the pictures and he was so nervous for me... about having people touch it. as the conversation went on, i realized that if it breaks it will be a LOT cheaper to print a replacement because i've already paid for the original computer program work.

that made me feel a lot LESS anxiety about the whole thing Chat Icon

As a cake decorator, I doubt it would sink into the cake... and if you're having buttercream as opposed to fondant it's DEFINITELY not sliding off. If you have fondant, just put it on right before you wheel it out or once it's in place or whatever.
