Manual/Stick or Automatic

Which do you drive?

I strictly prefer manual. I’ve been driving it for 15 years. Automatics bore me.

What is your choice?

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

On LI, with the traffic we have, manual is just a pain. I'd like to eventually get a "fun" car, that isn't very practical, and I don't use all of the time, but when it's nice out, and I feel like enjoying the drive, I can use it. That car would be a manual, convertible, sports car. I can drive a manual just fine, and I did own one for a while, but DW can't drive them at all, so it's a non-starter, since she'll need to drive my vehicle once in a while.

I can't believe in this day and age they even make manuals anymore.
I mean we don't even start our cars with keys anymore.

But they save on gas. I pay about $7-8 per gallon. And they (sticks) are more fun to drive.

Actually, for some new cars, the auto is faster 0-60 (0-62 for Europeans... Chat Icon ), and saves on gas.

Ferraris and Lambos don't even have manual gearboxes anymore, since their autos are faster.

In general, yes, a manual is better on fuel, and quicker, but it's not an automatic blanket statement.

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

I only know how to drive automatic. I do have to say I get rather nauseous in a car being driven in manual and I have a stomach of steel!

Manual/Stick or Automatic

I couldn't imagine driving a manual (DH loved his) then again, it was mostly for racing purposes.

I love stick and drove it for years but not in long island traffic! I was caught in a snow storm. Took 7 hours to go from queens to Huntington. In. A. Stick. Not doing that again, lol

I have an automatic because I drive a minivan. But I was just thinking yesterday how I wish I could drive a manual again! It was a lot more fun!

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

I feel like a lot of cars don't even have the option of manual anymore. Sports cars, yes. And maybe small, affordable base models, but not a modern day mid sized sedans. It's not even an option

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

I had a manual on LI when I lived there. It wasn’t so bad in traffic. I had one experience where I was in the middle of a snow storm/ ice storm and couldn’t do too good, but that was because I had just learned.

The only thing that annoyed me was when people got to close to the back of the car. I felt saying something all the time that happened (you can roll backwards). At least they give you space here.

Now when I go home I get to use my familly’s cars. They are automatic and I feel like I could just fall asleep driving them. So boring!

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

One thing I was thinking of....there would probably be less texting ans driving if all cars were manual. It's harder to be distracted with other things when you have to manually shift.

That is a very good point. I cannot do anything but concentrate on the road when I drive. I have both hands and feet to use and I need to concentrate on the RPMs and shifting. There is no time for texting or any of that crap. If I need to text, then I pull over. Once I get into the highest gear, there is a chance to do other things (change the radio etc.), but with people going 100 mph on the Autobahn, you kind of need to concentrate.

Interesting article. However, the brands listed in the article are hard to come by here, so I don’t know how that could work here. It’s pretty strictly BMW, Mercedes, VW, Opel, Audi, Peugeot. They are starting to change to automatics, but I just cannot do it. Plus if you do not do your license in manual, then the license is seen as less of a license if that makes any sense.

The driving tests here are brutal. A theory test with 900 questions (only 30 are used on the exam) to memorize, and the practical exam which can last 45 minutes. You also need to do a first aid course as it is illegal to not take care of that person if something happens. And this a from a country that drives at 100mph on the highways, lol.

I lucked out and got a nice examiner on my practical test. He was like OK you can drive and talked about Gummy Bears with my instructor (you need to have an instructor who has taught you; there is no such thing as a permit here). It lasted 15 minutes and I even stalled, lol. But that’s hard to tell with the cars here as they turn off when at a red light.

Automatic.

Manual is too bothersome to drive in NYC and Long Island.
But then again, you barely get out of second gear.

Manual/Stick or Automatic

I used to have a Manual but now have an Automatic. I LOVED driving my Manual - even in LI traffic! One day when my kids are older and I don't need a "mom" vehicle, I will get a fun Manual again.

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

DH and I both LOVE driving stick. It's so much more fun. But it's a nightmare in traffic. So we usually have one automatic and one stick. Over the years it has varied, but currently DH has the manual car.

I plan to teach both of my kids how to drive stick.

Automatic.. I am pretty sure stick isnt really an option. Like music CD's Chat Icon

I never learned how to drive stick but to be honest I don't like driving. My only purpose is to get me from A to B, so I don't anything will make it more fun for me.

My friend dd bring her Manual car over from Germany when she get out of the army several years ago. It was a pain for her to drive by my house because of the hills and the snow was terrible.

Re: Manual/Stick or Automatic

i prefer an manual transmission.

i currently drive an automatic diesel truck... don't ask lol

i don't think i'll be able to drive a manual transmission again because i've developed "bad knees" in my old age and they ache when i drive manual.
