Grand Jury Duty?

Got a notice to report for Grand Jury duty and that service will likely be 4 weeks or more... anyone ever get selected? It's my slow season so at least work isn't too crazy but I'm a grad student and I wonder if they'll dismiss me because of that? Also, I think 4 weeks straight would be ok but I remember an old co-worker serving on grand jury for a day a week for MONTHS. LOL. ugh!

ETA-Also, I know that they select for 4 courts, can I choose which one I would want to be selected for? (Called to Riverhead)

Re: Grand Jury Duty?

I got called for Grand Jury Duty once. There was no way I was going to be able to do a month straight of Jury Duty. I let them know I could not serve because it would cause financial hardship for me since my job only pays for a certain amount of days of Jury Duty. I got a letter from HR and gave it to them when I showed up to the initial hearing. They then ended up just giving me regular Jury Duty which was 2 days before I was dismissed.

I was selected. It's really hard to get out of once you've been selected as you don't need to be there everyday. I was there maybe two or three times a week for 3 months? I work in a law firm so obviously my job needed to be understanding. Some days we would even only go in for an hour or two depending on what cases needed to be presented that day. It was actually really interesting, I served in Brooklyn which covered the airports so there was a lot of drug smuggling cases.

ETA: Some people on our grand jury missed a day here or there because of meetings or doctor's appointments. A pregnant woman was dismissed because she was about to give birth in like a week or two, but everyone else was told they still needed to serve. Nobody mentioned financial hardship though. They do give you a small stipend for serving, but my job paid me instead and received the stipend. I was still reimbursed for travel from the courts and was able to keep that.

ETAA: I don't know about being selected for 4 different courts. I was called to Brooklyn and served in Brooklyn.

Re: Grand Jury Duty?

I got called to Grand Jury at Riverhead. Went the first day, presented childcare as a hardship (no one to get them on the bus in the morning). Got a letter from HR that my work schedule was such that I was allowed to come in late/work from home in the AM so that I could put my kids on the bus. Brought their birth certificates too....the woman was like, I am not supposed to accept childcare as an excuse if you work FT and I said, yes, but Im not 9-5, my job allows flexibility bc I cannot get in by 9. I said, id be more than happy to serve but I wont be here before 10am when I am called then. They let me swap for Regular Jury Duty and pick the month Id serve that and I went home.

ETA: if my job paid me, I would have LOVED to have done it.

Grand Jury Duty?

When i was just called for Grand Jury i called the number on the summons and told them the same as 2BadSoSad -- although I work i have flex hours so I can care for my kids. They said no problem OVER THE PHONE and told me to mail in proof (copy of birth certificate). A few weeks later i received a notice in the mail that i have been exempted. I never even showed up in person!

I loved Grand Jury- it was like a months vacation from work!!! I served almost 2 years ago- I went every day to Central Islip- we were not allowed to pick where we served. I was lucky my job paid the whole time- I served in October I had all of my Christmas shopping done it was a dream!!!

Me too!! I LOVED it. I also was in Central Islip. Yes I got paid from my job so I know that its different for everyone. I work in Nassau and It was so nice not to have to commute for the month. We all went to Riverhead originally and then from there they chose where you would report.

Sometimes we would only have 1 case and then Id get to go home for the day.Chat Icon

Re: Grand Jury Duty?

I just know for myself, it wouldn't be a day off.
I have the kind of job where the work has to get done, so if I got cut loose early, I'd be going into the office or at least working from home the rest of the day.
And I'd be working at nigh to make up for it.

Sounds like an utter nightmare to me

I loved it too! I only heard one case during my 3-4 week duty. The hours (9-3) were better than my regular work hours (7-3)!! I was so stressed out about missing the last month of the school year but it was actually pretty awesome!!

Grand Jury Duty?

I served in Riverheard for a month. But they do choose all the juries at Riverhead, so just because you're being called there doesn't mean you will serve there.
I was told there was no way to get out of it unless you can prove financial hardship. And since I was paid through work, it wasn't. I actually loved it and found it so fascinating and relaxing.
