how to stay on topic...
i'm prepping for a phone conversation about to happen tomorrow with someone who is known to be a deflector and veer the conversation off topic, intentionally i believe.
Without too much detail, this is basically a business call that could potentially lead to someone being fired.
As I prep for the call, I realize I must stay on topic. Any advice on how to make sure the topic does not get deflected?
I literally made notes for myself to assert my points and one of them says STAY ON TOPIC. other than that i'm not sure if there are other ways to do so.

Take the emotions out of it. Once you take that out and stick to the points of the conversation you'll be fine.

Re: how to stay on topic...
I'd say just make a conscious effort to stay on topic and not get distracted or veer off too far.

Re: how to stay on topic...
One thing I would do is say at the beginning that we are going to discuss A,B, and C.
If it starts veering off into another topic, I’d simply say that that isn’t what we are discussing today and reiterate A,B, and C, and that you can talk about that other topic at another time.
I would probably make a plan for the phone call. Kind of like an essay plan. Start out with your intro and then do some notes for each topic and add things for each of those topics you want to discuss.
I’m a teacher and when students get off topic or do something too complicated for their level, I just kind of shut them down and tell them that we will do that in the future. That usually stops them and they accept that answer.

This exactly - put together an agenda for the call and when things veer off topic, get back on track by saying “let’s come back to __________” and roll from there. I lead a call once or twice a week and it’s tonight when one person segues into a whole bubble of nothing - just gotta grab the reigns and pull everyone back on track.
