Negotiating pay?
Is it frowned upon to negotiate pay? I am starting a new job soon and we are interviewing for my replacement at work and one of the persons we interviewed negotiated the salary which we can’t give what she wants but it was almost frowned upon and shocking that she would negotiate... is this the norm? This is the first time I’ve been in a spot where I’ve seen the hiring side of things and I was kind of taken back

Yes, absolutely.
I strongly suggest you do the same- I demanded a crazy amount of money and they paid right up.
ETA: sorry, meant to say that yes, negotiating is the norm and not frowned upon.

normal and everyone should try and negotiate but IMO not until a job is offered.

We don't frown upon it at all, but the company I work for has very strict guidelines for salary. When we post a job it is with a salary range attached and if you have more experience you would come in at the high end of that range, less you would come in at the low end. Getting anything more approved by upper management is extremely difficult. Maybe a little more if I could give a really compelling reason, but not anything significantly over that range.

I hire pretty much entry level we post a range - I have had people ask for like 5K over range- we just tell them no. The range is there for a reason - going beyond a range is almost impossible. If a job didn't have a range I would think you are more than welcome to negotiate.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant. Same for me at my company and I do hire mostly entry to mid level experience. Some people come in asking for more money than I make as a manager to do a pretty much entry level position. Yeah, not happening I think a lot of it depends on the industry too and your particular profession.

i think in the hiring process negotiating is expected. my DH's current job he negotiated a few more vacation days b/c he wasnt taking medical benefits.
I wouldnt negotiate until an offer was made..like I wouldnt be doing that in a first interview. because someone is asking doesnt mean they will get it.

Same in my office. My mother works in advertising and she was able to negotiate a higher salary when she started her new job.

I feel like if a salary range is given up front, then it would be weird to go in and ask for a ton more money on top of that. I did a phone interview last year for a position that was similar to my current one. I asked the HR rep for the salary range of the position and they told me it was lower than what I was currently making. So i let them know they only way I would make a move is if they offered at least 5k more than what I was currently making, they were not willing to go above their posted range for the job, so I never moved forward with it.

Negotiating pay?
My current employee doesn’t give salaries upfront. This happened after the offer was made to this prospective employee and when we were reviewing the candidates my boss mentioned it like it was a horrific thing! I didn’t negotiate salary at my new job because they gave me more than I was expecting! I was just curious! I have been at my job 7 years and this is only my second job of my careee!

Speaking as someone on the hiring side - ALWAYS negotiate. At least try and offer specific examples about why you think you deserve more (your experience, degrees, salary benchmarks for the industry, etc). The worst that happens is they say no. I almost try to get people to negotiate with me and in my experience most don’t, especially women!

Always try to negotiate vacation and paid time off (PTO) as well. Especially if the initial offer is two weeks vacation. No way.
My current job their initial policy was two weeks. I negotiated it up to three weeks at hire. Then I asked for four weeks after three years. And now after six years I asked for five weeks off. All approved with no issues.
I’m in the field where it’s expexted to answer emails after hours and since I do this it shows in my reviews.
I like my time off.

Negotiating pay?
If you were a man this wouldn’t even be a question. You always negotiate. Employers want to get you at the lowest salary you can. It’s up To you as the employee to do research, figure out your worth and to negotiate. Could be salary, could be working from home, can be benefits. Almost everything is negotiable.
For example my dh just started a new job. He negotiated $10k more in salary, 4 weeks PTO, 2 weeks sick, benefits started day 1 and he walked in with 2 weeks of PTO since we already had a trip planned.
