Re: Anyone else's oldest child (ahem...dh) NOT know where the garbage ohamper are

I used to be like this. I used to be SUCH a mess - I just did not care at all.

It can be broken. It takes effort (and a purge of unnecessary crap) but now, I’m neat and tidy to a fault. And I don’t think it has anything to do with laziness, because I can be a sloth about things. It’s one of those things that if you put forth the effort with a massive purge/reorganization/deep clean, it’s only maintenance from that point out. Doing 5-10 minutes of tidying up per day is really impactful.

DH is the same way. Really neat, super organized. It helps so much.

I didn't read through the replies prior to answering but I make them stop whatever they are doing and go pick up or clean up after themselves. If they tell me to wait a minute because they are watching TV, playing a video game, etc...it gets taken away. I tell them it's easier for me to remove said item then fight or wait for them. This has been extremely effective especially with my 10 year old.

ETA: I thought you were talking about children Chat Icon real children.

Umm I kind of do that.
I don't put empty things back in the fridge or cabinet but I have been known to leave shoes everywhere, socks where I drop them, a mess everywhere in the bathroom.

I'm just a natural born slob and it's very hard for me/takes a lot of conscious thought/effort to not be. Being messy just comes naturally to me where coming neat is an effort.
My DH is the opposite. Naturally a neat person.

So it's not a gender thing- definitely an individual person thing.

Though the stereotype is definitely that it's always men who are like this.

It also has nothing to do with the way he was raised- because my mom is totally neat and I was raised by her.

We are twins
I’m the worst
I def don’t mean to be lol and my mom was on me to clean up after myself all the time
My DH is pretty patient but still I need to make a conscious effort
I’m working on it :)

DH is good about containers and such but last week I found a pile of dirty clothes behind the couch. Like a child who knew he’d get in trouble. I get mad when he leaves it out so apparently this was the solution so he could stay lazy and not have to listen to me. He failed because I found it.

He does his own laundry so eventually he would have wanted his sh!t clean and gotten it out of there.

OMG DH has done this EXACT thing with used tupperware (we bring lunches to work every day in them). I found a huge stash of them in the garage just days after we had a conversation about where the heck all of our tupperware was going. And he acted so confused like he didn't know there were about 15 containers just feet from the house. If you're taking it out of your car anyway, just bring it into the house!!! We have a dishwasher, so it's not like he even has to do any extra work Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Mine likes to leave things on top of the bathroom counters instead of in the cabinets where they belong. In addition to the garbage/hamper amnesia....

my son is this way. He's 10.

We are OCD with cleaning and keeping things tidy. So I don't get it!!!

Maybe it's the 1st child syndrome and we did do too much, but i've never been one to clean up after him.

But he is a SLOB. I don't get it. My 2nd isn't this way and neither is my 3rd so far.

It's inborn. A personality trait. It's very very hard to change.
It's like telling someone who is naturally introverted to be outgoing.

and now i'm going to go jump out my window. Chat Icon You mean i have another 10 more years of this mess with him? It drives me in sane! AHHH!!!

LOL yes. I was a slob growing up. My dad probably still has the picture he took of my room when I was a teenager because it was such an insane mess he couldn't believe it. And now, I'm in my 40s, married, with a house and to be honest, if it wasn't for my DH, my room would look the same way. To a point it kind of does.
I make efforts to straighten up/organize but it reverts back within a week or so.
I just naturally tend towards disorder.
Neat and orderly does not come naturally to me.
And to be honest, I just don't care either.
