i don't want to come across as pretentious

i'm addressing an invitation to a married same-sex couple.

if i address the envelope: "The Mesdames Amanda and Jane Doe"
would i come across as pretentious.

or should i just address it to Mrs. Amanda Doe and Mrs. Jane Doe?

eta: i don't know them. i've only met one on the phone when asking for her address for the party.

I would do the second way. Yes, IMO the first sounds pretentious.

Well, if you must then do the second way. I would also use Ms.

I prefer to be called just by my name. I don’t need a Ms. or anything.

If I were addressing envelopes for a bday party, etc. I would just use names. I cringe when I get letters or invitations that say Ms. or Mrs. But I may be a bit sensitive to this issue.

I would use the second one unless you’re inviting them to tea with the Queen!

I tend to agree. I'm not really sensitive to issue but I just think Mrs. and Ms. are so old fashioned.
I'm very informal so I would put
Jane and Jill Doe
Unless it was for a wedding maybe.

Yeah, I don't use these titles when I'm addressing envelopes; it feels antiquated.

I'm a bit sensitive to the issue too. DH and I both kept our own names when we got married. We aren't changing them in any fashion, so we're Jane Doe and John Smith.

DH"s family always addresses envelopes "Mr. & Mrs. John Smith." It's so annoying.

Yup. I didn’t change my name when I was married. I was very proud of my last name. Just use my name and that’s it.
