How much would you give
I know this is a hated topic, but I am unsure how much to give. My sister and her fiance are getting married in a couple weeks. I was planning on giving $1000 but I am not sure if that is too little. My husband, my two boys and I are going. I paid for the bridal shower by myself (no help from any bridesmaids or her inlaws) and most of the bachelorette by myself as well (supposedly the bridesmaids have no money). I also got her very generous (I believe) gifts for her shower. My sister was 20 when I got married and didn't give me anything for my wedding (nor did she pay for anything because my mom was alive and paid for it all). My mom recently passed away and I feel like I have to go above and beyond for everything. My husband is a bit annoyed I have spent so much money on this (especially when my sister and I really arent super close).I won't give less than $1000 but feel cheap not giving more. I don't remember how much I gave my brother as he and I got married about 11 years ago.

$1,000 is too little? I'm sorry, but that is more than generous.

How much would you give
1000 seems like a lot. Especially with all the other stuff you already paid for.

$1000 is a lot of money. We did $500 for my brother’s wedding in 2016 and I thought that was a lot.

For a family of 4? I think I gave my 2 best friends 500 when it was dh and I. And that was over 10 years ago! I just figured with adding on the two of us it would be more. Dh is happy with these responses though. I am probably just being crazy.

I think you are very generous. 10 years ago, I was giving good friends $250.
At my brother’s wedding, it was me, my DH, and my then 2 year old.
My sister was a family of 4 and gave either $500 or $600. Both of her children were toddlers as well.

How much would you give
I gave my best friend (who is equivalent to a sister) $500. I was her MOH and spent a fortune on her shower, bachelorette, etc.
$1,000 is definitely more than generous.

$1,000 is what my sister gave me. And she threw my bridal shower but split Bach weekend with my bridesmaids.
I was shocked when I saw that check in the card. You are being very very generous and your sister is going to be extremely grateful for it.
I think you’re a wonderful sister stepping in for mom during this special part of your sisters life.

How much would you give
We give $500 for close friends for just DH and I and we have BIL and SIL $1000 in 2012 for their wedding and they did the same (sort of- bought me an IPAD and wireless keyboard and DH a PS4) for our wedding (don’t ask...) and if my brother gets married we will give him $1k as well. He gave us $500 for ours but is and was still single

Re: How much would you give
$1000?!?!?!?! Damn.
I gave my sister $250 because I also paid for everything and was tapped out at that point.
For a family of 4 to attend, I might give $400-$500. However, considering how much you have already done, $250 would be MORE than enough IMO.
Edited to say... thank god I don't know anyone getting married anytime soon because at that rate, there is NO WAY I could afford to attend.

Re: How much would you give
$500 is enough. $1000 is too much considering everything else you did. Had you done none of the above I would understand wanting to give $1000.

How much would you give
If I were in your shoes I would give $1000. I would give the same if not more if I had siblings. I would probably be the wrong person to ask because BIL family gave us $3000 when we got married (family of 4). It also depends on what you can afford of course.

Re: How much would you give
I'd probably give the same if I could for my sister or brother. You are NOT being cheap at all. I know you're trying to fill in your mother's shoes, but you don't have to. You've done so, so much for your sister.

I think you should feel very comfortable and confident in that gift, especially considering everything else you did

How much would you give
That is more than enough. I wouldn't give any more than that especially with all you have spent already. I honestly couldn't imagine giving anyone that amount as a gift. I gave my sister a lot less than that.

Re: How much would you give
I should have invited you and most people on here to my wedding.
Granted its your sister and if my sibling had ever gotten married I probably would have gave more than I normally do. Which my max would be $500.
My average giving is $75-$100 per adult person when I attend a wedding. If my 2 kids were invite I maybe add and extra $50-$75 to my total.
IMO people are out of control when giving gifts. I don't believe in covering your plate and I don't understand why some expect you too!

i understand all the emotional reasons you want to give as much as you're giving.
i think that $1k is very, very generous... with all the other money you've spent. your sister is a lucky woman to have you.

I think that is a nice gift. I also think you were very generous in paying for the shower and bachelorette party.
So no, it is not too little.
