We're having some difficulty trying to narrow down areas in our search. Our top priorities are an excellent school district with activities and programs for both special education and gifted students and a safe family-friendly neighborhood. We also don't want to be too far from the LIRR (in case work transfers us back into the city in the future). We're mostly looking on the North Shore of Western Suffolk (we don't want to go further East than Smithtown). Please help me in our search. These are the school districts we're currently looking in. Please help me add other districts we may have missed or remove the ones that don't fit our criteria. Thank you!!!
Commack Half Hollow Hills Harborfields Smithtown Northport-East Northport Kings Park (We had Hauppauge on the list but a poster informed me that special ed programs were lacking in this district)

The only number I usually recommend using is what percentage of High School graduates go on to 4-year colleges? (I also personally like a district that teaches spanish since K, and one that has Mandarin chinese as a HS foreign language or elective). You can find this info on Newsday.com (I think it's called the school report card)
