Cavities
So my son has a couple of cavities from his visit yesterday. I never had and my older DS didn't. He's only 6. What can I expect from a cavity fill?
I want to add we don't have dental. We just pay out of pocket. DH owns his own business. This dentist is affordable. I like the dental assistants, but don't really love the dentist. Since we only saw him a few moments at the end to check their teeth I never really thought about it. Figured twice a year isn't a big deal.
Now with the caveties I'm getting worried for DS. He's pretty brave, but has no clue what's gonna happen. The dentist never even gave me a moment to speak with him after the visit to discuss it.

Does your office do the laser treatment for kids? DS is the same age and just had cavities filled and it was a pretty easy process. They laser the cavity, then put the filling in. No Novocain.

Re: Cavities
My advice- sweet air. I am not a fan of sweet air and never had it myself and I was a nervous wreck about giving it to my daughter but man did it make the experience so much better. She remembers nothing. She doesn't even know she got a needle. She said she was flying. LOL She has had 2 cavities filled and both times were a breeze. We had to pay out of pocket for it, but it was worth every penny. I didn't want her developing a fear of the dentist at such a young age

Re: Cavities
Thanks all. I think I'm going to get a 2nd opinion and/or switch dentists. If the dentist was better and had more patience I'd stay, but just have a bad feeling. Like I said... for twice a year for cleaning I was fine with it.

Re: Cavities
I was so worried for my daughters to have cavities filled and it was NOTHING! However the dentist filled them they didn't need Novocaine and it was completely pain free. It was actually a relief for my kids as the cavity was hurting them.

At 5 dd had sweet air and it was surprisingly easy. She flips out over needles and hard no idea what they were doing. I did switch dentists after that bc I was pissed they had noticed the two problem areas previously but never told me anything other than that she was doing wonderfully. I switched to Sachem dental and they only have a ped dentist one day a week. It's so nice to go in there in the afternoon for a kid's appointment and not be surrounded by what feels like a thousand screaming children and everything feeling rushed.

How much does it cost generally if using the gas ? First time I did it in hospital was pretty expensive This time I opted for the gas ,I don’t know how he will cooperate . Found out he has 2 new cavities y.day. Getting only 1 filled

Ours was $50 the first time. Them 1 year later they jacked it up to $90. Huge jump! But still worth every penny

Re: Cavities
I'd definitely recommend the sweet air. It usually relaxes them and makes for a better overall experience. I find that the less you make of it, the better it will be for him. Act like it is no big deal. I wouldn't make an issue of hand-holding either. If you are paying out of pocket, I'd go to a dentist you like. Although for this, it might be easier for your son to stay there as he knows the office and staff already.
