cocktail party menu take 2

ok...
party is 5 hours; from 5pm to 10pm

my initial guess on timetable is:

5:00ish: guests arrive and wait for birthday boy
booze and one/two simple apps available
5:30: guest of honor arrives
6:00 - 8:00: passed apps
8:15ish: birthday cake enters - happy birthday - cake and coffee/tea station plus one more app for those who don't want cake.

since i signed my contract, the venue has made changes to menu. i can pick from package and from a la carte.

package options (total of 7):
* stuffed mushrooms (hot)
* portobello skewers (hot)
* Thai chicken skewers (hot)
* artichoke crostini (hot)
* trio taste of dips (hot)
* chilled tortellini
* fruit platter
* veggie platter
* caprese skewer
* california bruschetta
* prosciutto asparagus

a la carte (that sound good to me or that i tried and liked):
* arancini (fried three cheese risotto croquette w/marinara)
* mini grilled cheese with tomato bisque shooter
* caprese skewers
* chicken skewers
* braised short ribs
* baja ceviche cup

vegetarian options from both possibilities:
* fruit platter (stationary)
* veggie platter (stationary)
* cheese platter (stationary)
* artichoke crostini (hot)
* portobello skewers (hot)
* california bruschetta
* caprese spoon
* mac n cheese (hot)
* spring roll (hot)

many of these apps are hearty and a very nice sized portion.
i want to give a nice variety and be considerate to those who have dietary restrictions.

tell me what sounds good to you. and you're welcome to mention something additional that you love when at a cocktail party that might be on the master list that i might have overlooked.

thanks for all your help!!
i'll be bothering you all about the booze after i figure this out lol

I know you're not asking this, but as someone who worked in PR and hosted many events - 5 hours is way too long for a cocktail party. I mean, weddings are 5 hours! They way you have it now there's 2 solid hours of passed apps and then another hour and 45 mins of just cake. You either need more food to fill in the time or cut the time.

My app suggestions are:

Stuffed mushrooms
Fruit platter
Crudite platter
Arancini
Short ribs
Chicken skewers
Spring roll
Ceviche
Artichoke crostini
Caprese spoon

you're right, it's not exactly what i asked but it's exactly what i needed to hear! THANKS. this is another of the million reasons why i'm starting so early, so i can evaluate and re-evaluate.

there will be live music/dancing.

with what you've said, i will take a much more serious look at their stations. they offer 4 specialty stations and 4 "action" stations (where you make your own...)

Timing:
The 5-6 o'clock hour seems long to wait for arrival. 6-8 for apps sounds good and it should be 8-9 for dessert? Is this a 3-4 hour affair? That is what it should be based on menu.

Food:
I'd choose:
* stuffed mushrooms (hot)
* Thai chicken skewers (hot)
* artichoke crostini (hot)
* veggie platter
* caprese skewer
* arancini (fried three cheese risotto croquette w/marinara)
* mini grilled cheese with tomato bisque shooter
* cheese platter (stationary)
* mac n cheese (hot)
* spring roll (hot)

those sound the best!!!

I agree. However, I change the Mac and cheese out for Short ribs. I hate Mac and cheese, though, so I’m a bit biased.

I don't even think mac and cheese was an option.
unless I'm missing it I didn't see that on her list of options.

I agree with PP that 5 hours is a long time. I would maybe have the stationary items out for the first hour and then stagger how everything else is put out. If you’re going to do the action stations, I’d have something like this:

5-6 stationary displays
6-7 passed apps
7-8 action stations
8:30-9:30 dessert

Keeps the displays out the whole time so people can pick if they want. All the food sounds good, just make sure you have plenty of vegetarian options. Everything sounds delicious!!!

Re: cocktail party menu take 2

mac n cheese is offered, but i'm not a fan either lol... then again, i can offer it but not eat it myself.

i like the timetable LuckyStar suggested... with only one small change. the passed apps are for 2 hours. but it's ok if things overlap.

you peeps are awesome.
you really, really helped me think this through.

a plated dinner is a hair cheaper than this, but since a lot of the guests haven't seen each other in a very long time, i want to give them the chance to hang out and mingle... and not be forced to sit for a plated meal.

woo hoo! i'm starting to picture this craziness come together.
