appetizer menu question: ETA menu ideas listed in first post

outdoor cocktail party in mid-december, in southern california (so it won't be too cold)... location has space heaters.

would you be open to and/or want some cold apps along with the hot ones?

i'm starting to narrow down ideas for the menu and was wondering if it should keep all the passed apps to hot items or should i include cold ones.

as a guest for a party like this, would you like a mix of the two or just the hot items?

MORE INFO ON POSSIBLE MENU:

hot apps that we tasted and loved (had tasting on friday)
* braised short rib (these are served over a shallot mash in a little "boat")
* stuffed mushrooms (stuffed with a cheese mixture and bacon)
* chicken tikka skewers (indian/curry seasoning)
* beef skewers (with pieces of red onion and peppers)

hot app that is on the definitely a possibility list:
* mini grilled cheese (served with a shot of tomato bisque)

possible cold apps on the maybe list:
* veggie platter
* classic bruschette
* caprese spoon
* baja ceviche cup (shrimp ceviche in cucumber cup)

Re: appetizer menu question

Passed apps I think should be hot (with the exception of say Bruchetta)

Will there be a few stations with veggies & dips and cheese platters w crackers, etc?

What kind of cold apps do they offer?
That will affect my answer.

Re: appetizer menu question

I’d do mostly hot with about 10% cold thrown in. I like hot food. That’s just me, though. If the cold apps were amazing, I’d be OK with that, too.

Tell us more about the exact menu.

This!

It depends on what the cold apps are but I generally like hot apps over brushetta and canapes.

Def cheese and crudité should be plattered.

I would do so because you don't really have enough vegetarian hot apps - just the grilled cheese. I would do bruschetta or veggie platter for sure.

Re: appetizer menu question: ETA menu ideas listed in first post

I would do all the hot apps + the grilled cheese. I would then choose the bruschetta and Caprese spoon for the vegetarians.

You are making me hungry!

I think there should be a mix. Not so much b/c hot vs cold, but because as someone else pointed out, the hot appetizers are very meat heavy. If this is a cocktail party, and you are't sure if you are having stations, you should think of it as a light meal, and keep it as balanced as possible.

Ii like all of the cold appetizer ideas except the shrimp, since you have other proteins.

Are you limited to a certain amount (is it a package?) or are you buying a la carte?

Those appetizers sound incredible. How many can you have? It also depends on what you will have for main course, so you can try to balance.

Your hot apps are all meat. You need vegetarian options, so I'd do a couple cold items. Something like a veggie platter should be out, not passed.

I would have a mix and then a couple stationary items- veggies, cheese, etc.

At a cocktail party, I prefer cold, non-messy apps.

since i booked so early and they've made a few changes to their menu/packages, i have the option of a hybrid of both.

originally, i had a package, but can choose a la carte.

at this time... i'm just thinking things through.
the first hot apps were the ones i tasted and liked. the others (hot and cold) are ones that catch my eye.

there are hot vegetarian options:
* spring roll
* stuffed mushrooms
* arancini (fried cheese risotto croquette w/marinara)
* mini grilled cheese
* portobello skewers
* artichoke crostini

cold/plated - not passed:
* veggie platter
* fruit platter
* california bruschetta
* chilled tortellini (cheese)

it's a cocktail party, no sit-down dinner.

i'm planning/thinking about:
5:00 guest arrival - booze opens, one plated app, one passed app (a la carte)
5:30 guest of honor arrive - suprise
hellos and pictures for a few minutes... up to about a half hour (guess)
6:00 - 8:00 passed apps - hot and cold (package)
8:15 ish cake makes entrance, happy birthday, dessert, coffee and tea station
8:30 one more passed app... for those who don't like sweets (a la carte)
10:00 party is over and venue becomes 21 and over. if guests want to stay, it's on them because i'll be dead.

again, this is my first thoughts; subject to change

Re: appetizer menu question: ETA menu ideas listed in first post

i was just emailed a little additional info!

they have "displays"

* farmer vegetable crudeites
* market fruit display
* bruschetta station
* cheese display

oh, man... i'm so hungry
and a little confused lol so many choices.

they also have "carved specialties"
but i think this is a bit out of my price range, but it sounds so yummy... reading this when i'm hungry/dieting is not a smart move lol

OK after your last update, could you give a total rundown of everything in the menu and what/how much you can pick out? I’m a bit confused.

The only criticism I have is the mushrooms. I’ve often found that vegetarians do not like mushrooms. I worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years and it was a common thing.
