repost from parenting...those who use natural soaps and detergents

My SIL has been having a hard time with my niece's sensitive skin. Everything causes her to break out. She uses plain Ivory soap on her skin, but the Ivory laundry detergent causes her to break out. So do all of the "free & clear" detergents. Her pediatrician recommended the following:
Charlie's Soap
Molly's Suds
Nellie's Washing Soda
OR
homemade laundry powder with a grated laundry soap bar, borax, & washing soda.

She has read mixed reviews on all of these, many people say that they don't clean well. Does anyone here use these? Do they actually clean clothes? She is reading lots of complaints about clothes looking dingy and not smelling or feeling fresh. Just looking for some other reviews or suggestions. TIA!

DS’s allergist recommended these too. The best success we have had is aquaphor baby wash and vanicream after and then for detergent, biokleen has been best and leaves the clothes clean. I also use borax regularly, it’s cheap, old school, and works very well! I like borax the best but used the biokleen when he was younger! The nellies and Charlie’s left the clothes crunchy and not clean.

Natural and homemade laundry detergents don't have surfactants which are necessary for the clothes to truly come out clean. Basically the surfactants bind to the dirt, oils, stains, etc, "grab" on to them, hold them and suspend them in the water and then take it all away when the machine drains.

I used Charlies soap for years now am using Seventh Generation.

My youngest had eczema and I didn't want a perfumny detergent or one which contains optical brighteners which most do.

Thank you, ladies. I will pass along this info to her. Twinmommy, do you use only Borax? Do the clothes come clean even with no soap?

I mix it with Dr. Bronners soap. I used this site https://wellnessmama.com/462/homemade-laundry-detergent/

If I have stains I soak with vinegar and borax before washing. Normally I used to be give me the ultra detergent and used tide, all, and even dreft when the kids were babies. My one twins skin is SO sensitive I’m talking full blown hives covering him from ANY scent. I’ve had every soap in my house tested with him. Initially I was washing his clothes separate with the dr. Bronners and borax. Unfortunately the hives still were there but not as bad. I had to clean and scrub my washer and run it many times to get any soap residue away and now we all only use dr bronners and borax. Even if we had him in our bed or held him... hives so we don’t really have a choice. I find my clothes are clean, I don’t have a problem even getting paint off their clothes so we are keeping to this and I feel my clothes are soft and more clean than with the nellies or Charlies
