Would you tip/give extra money?
I have a friend (by friend I mean we don't ever hang out or talk too much she was my brother's friend he passed away several years ago and she stood in contact with our family) coming to my house to do my hair.
I am getting a trim, balayage and my roots done (I need to cover some gray hair) She is also going to trim my daughter's hair and do some fun highlights with hair dye I am providing for my DD.
This isn't the first time she is doing this (maybe I didn't get balayage but I got highlights always), however other times she didn't charge me a lot maybe around $60 so I always gave her extra money because I know if I went somewhere else it would cost me more money.
This time around she is charging me $150 for all of it. I am fine with that, pretty sure that's average price. But should I be giving her extra money on top of the $150?

I still would tip. I'd tip someone I don't know, so I would definitely tip someone I have a relationship with, regardless of how close.

Re: Would you tip/give extra money?
$150 sounds cheap for all that so yes, I'd throw her some extra since she is also driving to you

Re: Would you tip/give extra money?
I guess I should have clarified why I am questioning it.
If I would have gone to where she works because she does work at a salon, would she receive all the money or do they get paid hourly/commission?
This is why I was questioning it. By coming to me I would think she gets to pocket all the extra money she wouldn't if I went to the salon she works at.
I don't mind tipping her either way but how much more would you give her?

It does seem weird to tip someone who sets their own price, and pockets all that money, doesn't it? I'm in the minority, but I wouldn't tip for that.

Re: Would you tip/give extra money?
I go to someones house who does highlights for me ($110) and if I get a cut its an addition ($40). To me it seems she is undercharging considering she is also providing services for your DD. I always tip what I would normally tip if at a salon approx. 20%.
In your case I would think tip would be appropriate. I would do $20-$30.

this kind of my line of thinking but I am still willing to tip. When she was undercharging me I always gave extra cause I knew she was but now she is not. Doesn't this go along with you don't tip an owner cause its all profit I don't believe in tipping in general except for things like this.

I think she is still undercharging you. Balayage is expensive.

see I thought she was but I asked someone who works on a salon and she told me for Balayage its $120 and cut and blow is $30. So to me, it seems the only deal I am really getting is my DD but my DD is really getting a trim and like 3-4 small strips of hair highlighted nothing great (she is 7). All in all I am grateful and not complaining.
Its fine I will throw her an extra $20-$30 since that seems to be the consensus. At least I know I don't have to feel I have to throw her $40-$60 like I usually do

But in some salons a haircut can be $50 or more and balyage close to $200

She's still supplying the product and a service. It's not like she's making $150 off the day. Plus, she could have been working that day. She's doing you a favor and not charging you a lot. Tip her.

I agree, I also think she is giving you a deal plus she is coming to you. Tip her.

I would definitely tip. She is still a professional providing her services, only not in the salon. Plus it is convenient that she is coming to you plus saving you alot.

From what i understand, if she works at a salon, the money goes to them. Only if she is doing it in her day off, would she get all the money. My sil is a hairdresser and explained it to me.
