Re: Nursing home/assisted living
It depends upon what is needed and what level of care the person needs. I would meet with an elder care attorney who can advise your family member on sheltering assets and Medicaid eligibility.
My grandmother is paying $450 a day for comfort care/acute care as she can no longer do anything for herself. She cannot use arms, hands, legs, is bed or wheelchair bound. Cannot feed herself. Family goes daily to feed her. What nursing homes call feeding, and what is actually feeling are different. Sadly, they leave food cut up give one or two bites and call it patient was fed. This is standard. There are better and worse places, but it depends upon what the person needs.
Assisted living (live in an apartment, common dining room, may have kitchenette) Rehabilitation (usually after hospitalization, and many times covered under insurance. They will not hand feed you though) Nursing home (may or may not hand feed, skilled nursing) Dimentia/Altzheimers (this is the most expensive) Hospice in hospital (2 weeks, must be certified by nurse and dr that patient will die within two weeks, person usually needs IV for morphine and catheter) Hospice at home (only comes occasionally) Hospice (in Bronx or Melville, can go for six months and be renewed.)

Nursing home/assisted living
I don’t have pricing info, but DHs grandparents have been in both the rehab and nursing home sections of Huntington Hills in Melville and received great care.
Whatever you do, stay the hell away from East Neck Nursing and Rehab Center in West Babylon. My grandmother received horrible care, including having to sit in her own vomit for six hours.

unfortunately not on long island but Mary Manning Walsh in Manhattan is very good. They even have a bar in the basement that residents can have access to (with doctors orders of course!). I want to check myself in!

Re: Nursing home/assisted living
What area are you looking in ?
FIL was in Mills Pond Nursing Home in St. James. Nice place, but as with every home, you have to be on top of their care. He was a medicaid recipient, so we didn't have too many good choices. St. James Rehabilitation next door was a nice place, felt more like a spa than a home. Huntington Hills in Melville was gorgeous, but didn't have available space. Figure about $470 per day for nursing home care, private pay.
Assisted Living is not covered under insurance. There is a set fee per month, then additional services are added on an "a la carte" basis. Depending upon the room size, the facility, costs are anywhere from $3500 to $6500 per month.
The choice between assisted living and nursing home depends entirely upon the needs of your loved one.
Stay away from any homes in Queens. Parking sucks and so does the care.

Re: Nursing home/assisted living
My recommendation would be to talk to an attorney about the patient's assets bc you want them to be eligible for Medicaid. Otherwise you will need to pay out of pocket and it can be upwards of 300-500 a day.

Re: Nursing home/assisted living
My Mom was in Gurwin for almost a year, they charge over $500 a day- I think it was like $565. Like someone else said you really need to speak to an Elder Care attorney- we used Davidow Davidow Segal and Stern and were happy with them- just an FYI they aren't cheap either- in the end I think we had to pay them over 15K - but we managed to get my Mom on Medicaid which covered a majority of the cost of her care at Gurwin. Good luck- the process is very difficult and emotional.

I have no experience as we took shifts caring for my grandfather but omg this made me so sad to hear! I'm so sorry for your grandmother! My grandfather was hospitalized SO many times and we saw so much - one nurse even wiped down his private parts and then was about to wipe down his face - luckily my grandfather was coherent and stopped him! UGH! It's so sad how people treat the elderly!

Re: Nursing home/assisted living
I have a family member in Sunrise Assisted Living in East Meadow but there are other locations in Nassau and Suffolk. The place is really nice, almost like a hotel with beautiful rooms and a dining hall that's more like a restaurant. It's upwards of $5000 a month for a private room. You can get a shared room for less. It's all private pay I believe.

And what they charge?? I am floored by what I am reading here and then to hear the care is so awful?? Something really needs to be done. This is disgraceful

OMG - we have the same awful review for East Neck as well - my FIL was there and on a feeding tube through his stomach and they "forgot' to feed him one day!! How do you forget something like that?
We are also in the looking stage for my mom as well - so I can't offer any suggestions but am curious on places. The process is so daunting
