anyone heard of Silver Diamine Fluoride?
The dentist mentioned this as a possible treatment for DD's tiny cavities.
I never heard of it but did some reading online - its a "new" thing for kids. Sounds pretty good.
Its a mix of silver and flouride in a clear liquid. Its applied to tiny cavities and it will stop the cavity from growing. So if its a small cavity then they won't need to drill.
I assume its only done on the baby teeth since they will fall out in a few years - so no need to drill (if its a small cavity) - and it will stop it in its tracks.
The drawback is that it turns the cavity black. lol. So I assume you want this done on teeth that is not easily seen when you open your mouth! If it gets on your skin it will become like a temporary tattoo and will not wash off. But will fade after a week or two.
I know some people are wary of silver or flouride in the body, but I think its only a tiny amount used.

My DS had this done, and we are going this week for the second application (apparently you are supposed to have it done twice). It is being done on his adult teeth (he will be 13 at the end of the month - the tiny cavities are between the teeth). We didn't notice any blackening. It is actually supposed to reverse the cavity - get the tooth to remineralize. We won't know how well it worked until he has x-rays again. It is $$$ though but his teeth are otherwise good (straight and one tiny cavity that was filled) so we opted to do it. BTW, he does not use flouride toothpaste so we really debated about this before doing it.

My ds does not have very good teeth. We have brushed his teeth morning and night, use fluoride toothpaste, and he uses mouthwash but he still ends up with a couple cavities plus a cracked tooth! When we found out about his 1st cavity I was DEVASTATED! I was so worried that he would be scared and traumatized to fill the cavity. I researched and found the silver diamond fluoride. I LOVED the idea and asked my dentist. They didn't do it. But it basically is used for young child or the elderly where dental care is less than ideal. No pain and no need to drill. I did read about the spot turning black but if it's a molar and small I wouldn't care at all. If my dentist was using the product I would have totally been on board. What dentist do you use?

Be careful. Fluoride is a neurotoxin. There is not real evidence it does t anything besides poison you. And side note I’ve never had fluoride nor do I brunch w toothpaste and in my life I have had ONE cavity in a wisdom tooth.

Re: anyone heard of Silver Diamine Fluoride?
My son has a bad cavity that will require root canal (they said they think it was a bad tooth, not from lack of care - thank Goodness). Because he is only 4 and the dentist did not think he would be able to sit still for 45 mins for the root canal, he recommended the silver diamine fluoride. It slows everything down but does not help stop the cavity. It also needs to be applied every 3 months so for your DD she would eventually need to get the cavity filled. And yes, it is black, but it's not noticeable when he smiles or even talks.
