i'm no longer a practicing catholic... but old habits die hard.

almost every year, i give up the same thing because it really is a sacrifice.

i gave up chocolate in all it's forms.

Nothing. I really dont' believe in giving something up. I'd rather do good deeds/acts of kindness.
I think that is a lot more effective.

I agree. I always would give up some sort of food. But what good did that do. Going forward, I will do more good deeds.

mine kind of combines that.
I gave up road rage. It's been a struggle not to yell at the dumb drivers on the road every day or cut them off to go aorund them, but i figure this way i am setting a positive exmaple for DS to be kind to others even when they are not.

Agreed. I try to do acts of kindness and donations to charities who are looking for specific items or by giving brand new items for gift baskets for fundraisers.

Same.

The first Sunday of Lent the priest was talking about this in his homily. He said in his country people gave up smoking cigars and drinking during lent and it made them miserable people. He said - what did that accomplish?

I gave up putting myself last—I have been focusing more on what I need to be happy and healthy—saying NO when I need to—Making sure I make time to get to the gym—it has really helped me to find the balance I have been missing
