Old navy dress sizing

How do old navy dress girl sizes run? Dd is either a 5 or 6 in casual dresses and I see their XS is a 5 and their S is a 6-7. Based on height chart, she’d be a solid XS. Do they shrink in the dryer? I put everything in the dryer full force, too busy to pull things out halfway through, hang, lay flat, whatever. Just don’t want it to shrink on me but I don’t want her to look like a schoolmarm either! Why must companies put 2 size intervals together! Tia!

Not sure about girl's sizing, but the toddler sizes seem to run large. I'd bet it's the same for girls. I'd go with the XS.

ETA: I never had a problem with shrinking and I never take things out of the dryer. I do put them on low heat but that's it.
