I think we saw the slow downfall the minute FAO closed their Manhattan location. Then TRU in times square. I am sad for the 33k people losing their jobs, but the affect is even greater than that to the toy industry as a whole. Toys R Us was keeping some toy manufacturers in business, as well as creating a need for certain toys in great number allowing the toy companies to make run on's for independently owned toy shops. Now what will happen? Will Amazon control the run's of toys? I wonder how they would be able to project what they will be able to sell, etc. This could mean huge changes for how toys are produced, how much they will cost, and our selection as a consumer.
The downfall happened long before this.
When I was going for my MBA, we did a case study on TRU in 2001 and they were no longer the largest seller of toys - Walmart was at that time. Basically Babies R Us was what was keeping them afloat.
I agree, but they are still a major player, and for some toy lines (smaller ones) could be their entire bread and butter.

I got an invitation to my cousin's baby shower in May. Of course, she is registered at BRU (she is due in July). So I went last night and got her presents. It was a madhouse.

I feel absolutely horrible for all those who lost their jobs, but I can't say I have an affinity for TRU. My FB is full of very emotional people singing the song. Maybe because the one I grew up going to was in the world's creepiest/filthiest "mall?" I didn't know this love of TRU was such a thing!

I feel terrible for all those losing their jobs. I rememher this store very fondly cause my mom took me there as a kid. God rest her soul :(. Sales are starting tomorrow. They are due to all close by May

Wow, that is kind of crazy.
I did see an article that there are funds being raised to try to keep about half the stores open so dont count them out just yet.

I just saw that too.
My mother was at the Commack store probably 2 weeks ago picking up furniture we had ordered for us (we ordered form the westbury store in December and eventually got all but one piece. We were basically told we were SOL, but magically, the Commack store had the piece even though it was special order so we lucked out!) -- anyway, the woman who was helping my mother claimed that she was the granddaughter of the founder and that he was just beside himself over the closure. I guess he died of a broken heart.

Yup. I wonder what they'll put in TRU's spot. Like what could possibly match the glory of that Kmart and be worth a ride on that escalator from hell?
