question for techy-er people than I am (so, basically everyone lol) - devices for playing music
I am a bit of a technical luddite. Outside of our phones, we really don't have any cool tech toys in our home. We have a television that we haven't even turned on in probably three months or so.
I currently have a portable multi-cd player in my son's room that we use to play his nighttime music. I know... cds. How 1990's. Anyway, it has worked well for a while, but I find that the cd's get scratched, warped, sound funny after a while... whatever.
So, what is a better way to play music? I tried looking online, but got overwhelmed lol. I saw Sonos and a bunch of other things that I can't remember right now.
What's good? And easy to use? And bonus points if it's small enough that I can pack it up and bring it on vacations and stuff. Basically, I just want to be able to play music/sounds all night for him without having to deal with actual CDs. I don't mind having to re-purchase all the albums or whatever. And it has to be small--able to fit on top of his dresser.
Any suggestions?

Cell phone/tablet. Even an old one without phone service. You can still use wifi on phones. With an Internet connection, you can download thousands of songs from all sorts of places. There are free sites, Amazon Prime has a huge database, there are streaming sites. You can also download songs so if you travel, you can still play all of your off-line songs.
Plus, since it's digital, there's nothing to misplace, no scratches, no warping, etc.
DD has my old phone, without cell service. She downloads apps, songs, etc.

I would just purchase a small bluetooth speaker and use your phone to purchase songs/albums or even listen using the spotify app for free. Then you can just "sync" to the bluetooth speaker and play it directly from your phone. I would just pay attention to whether you want it to be battery-operated or a plug-in, some have the option for both.
ETA - Now that I think about it, I'm not sure how far away your room is for your son's room to play it continously overnight. I might consider an echo dot instead of the speaker (it connects via wifi and you can control it from your room while he's in bed).

They don't travel well, though. Can't use them in the car. They need to be on-line all the time.

But they are small enough to be packed up and brought places. It depends on the internet though at the destination.

Which is one of the reasons why, for a self-professed non-techie, it's not the best choice for what OP is looking for. It's great for what it's designed for, but for this case, she needs something with off-line storage and playback.

The echo dot can also be used as a Bluetooth speaker, although I find the sound isn't that great on the dot compared to the actual Echo. Do you have Amazon Prime? If so it makes sense to get the echo. You can stream music and radio stations from it. You can also download some songs, and play them offline which would work for vacation. But the majority of vacation destinations do have wifi

We love our Bose SoundTouch indoors and Megaboom speaker that we use outdoors and can get wet.
