Re: ADD/ ADHD

I dont have a girl - but I went through this twice. My SS who is 20 was diagnosed with ADHD & behavioral, we got my 9yr old evaluated and he showed ADD tendencies.

I will be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for the responses.

Do your children realize that they are unfocused, distracted and not remembering things? Or are they totally unaware?

DD doesn't notice anything is wrong, but her teachers, coaches and of course myself are concerned.

DS started medication last May. Sometimes when he is more unfocused than usual he calls it his “bad brain,” especially on a day he isn’t taking his meds or it has worn off.

My DS knows he takes medicine to help with school but I don’t think he knows with exactly what it helps him with. I didn’t really tell him why because my son is smart and I know he will use it as an excuse when he does something wrong.

His test has improved so much since we upped his dosage and he is more focused. But there is still work the child has to put in to focus. For example his test scores last week outstanding.. remembering to bring his project and hwk sheets were a nightmare.

Re: ADD/ ADHD

My son is not on medication. We take him to see a behavioral therapist and she has talked to him about what he's feeling. We refer to his more hyperactive behavior as "popcorn" body. He chose that terminology. He's still working on being self-aware. Most of the time my DH and I point out to him, it looks like you're feeling popcorn...

I can't recommend enough finding a therapist. It has been so great for our family and has helped immensely. Also talk to the teacher and your school. There are things they may be able to do to help. My son is allowed to get up and walk around the class periodically, he has a special seat for circle time and he's allowed to take notes during circle time.
