SAHMs with infant/toddlers and Jury Duty

Just got a jury duty qualification questionairre. I stay home with my 1 year old, who still nurses throughout the day, has never been left with anyone besides me and once in a while dh for a short time like if I have a Dr appt (but he works full time), and would be terrified if I had to leave him all day for jury duty. Does anyone know if that is a valid excuse? Also we have no family members available to watch him and don't have a babysitter. I guess I would have to find one and layout the money if I had to go in for jury duty? Or could I show up with him and say I have no one to watch him? The form says a possible excuse is "being in care of a child under 10 whose health and/or safety would be jeopardized by my absence" Not sure if that covers my situation?

Yes it's a valid excuse! Just write your the sole care taker as a stay at home Mom on the questioneer. I think you get like 3 or 5 years before they send you another one then.

SAHMs with infant/toddlers and Jury Duty

I got a questionnaire last year. I had a 3 and a 1 year old at the time. I wrote in the questionnaire that I’m a stay at home mother with no childcare options and sent in copies of my kids birth certificates. Didn’t hear anything since.

Re: SAHMs with infant/toddlers and Jury Duty

Dh has done this twice I believe and never heard back both times.
Just send a letter, with a copy of their birth certificate, and explain you are a stay at home mom with no child care options.

fill out the questionnaire, but if you get called for jury duty you can just write a letter explaining you're the primary caregiver and they will dismiss you

I had a preschooler home with me last year and I got called for jury duty. I called them and they just told me to write a letter with a copy of her birth certificate and send it in. I did that and never heard back from them. I didn't show up for jury duty and nothing has happened. IF you are a stay at home mom with children under school age home with you they don't make you do jury duty. I am not sure what happens once they are all in school.

Thank you! Once he's school age I won't mind bc I'm sure he will be ok with a babysitter by then if necessary. It's just that currently he's terrified if even a family member besides me or dh tries to hold him for a second and he's so clingy to me. He sobs if I leave him with dh to bring dd to the bus stop! I would feel terrible if I had to leave him all day and he didn't understand why. I'm relieved to know that it sounds like i will be excused.

I wondered about that too.
DD is now in school, but she gets off the bus at 2:40 pm. That would mean DH would have to be guaranteed to be OUT of jury duty and home from Riverhead or wherever by that time. I would think you'd still be excused when they are in school but not yet old enough to come home by themselves.

I was excused a couple of years ago, when DS was in 3rd or 4th grade.

I know I thought the same. My only thought was I guess technically you could get aftercare but I don't think that they could require you to. It's funny I wanted ot get jury duty so badly when I was working and I never got called. The second I had kids and actually couldn't do it they send me letters all the time!!!

You really can't get aftercare though. Aftercare in my district has to be signed up for ahead of time- like before the school year starts- so they can plan and staff for it. So if DH got called to Jury Duty he couldn't just say, yeah lets put her in after care for a few weeks.
Not to mention the cost. They can't expect you to incur a child care cost you never had before just to serve Jury Duty.

I would check. For steady aftercare you have to be signed up but my district definitely takes drop ins with a few days notice and so do friends districts

Hopefully they don't make a fuss about it once both my kids are in school. There is literally NO way I would chance being out in Riverhead when my kids need to be put on the bus at 9 and taken off by 4. They also can't force you to find and PAY for childcare so I'll just keep sending in letters and birth certificates while my kids are in school and hopefully that works. There are enough other people to pull for jury duty, I can't see them pressing the issue with a SAHM.

Eh, If it gets him out of jury duty, which it has, we'll just keep quiet about it. Chat Icon
I don't need to incur an expense for him to serve jury duty. To me, that is ridiculous. Jury duty should NOT cost you money
