Re: Paid Parental Leave

In 2018, employees may take up to eight (8) weeks of PFL for qualifying reasons and receive 50% of their average weekly wage for such weeks of leave. The PFL benefits will increase in stages each year until it reaches 12 weeks of leave and 67% of average weekly wage in 2021. PFL is an insured benefit that is community-rated and paid for through employee contributions. For 2018, that contribution is set to 0.126% of an employee’s weekly wage.

I heard the UFT didn't agree to this? Is this all of NYS jobs regardless of the public or private sector?

This is a state law, yes.

Just clicked the link. First thing it says is not all. This is confusing.

As of January 1, 2018, most employees who work in New York State for private employers are eligible to take Paid Family Leave. If you are a public employee, your employer may choose to offer Paid Family Leave.

I was previously a state employee and was told my union (not UFT) had not agreed to it. So I think there are exceptions.

It was one of the many things that had me Chat Icon over what was so great about being a state employee. I couldn't wait to return to the private sector.

Wow. Unless they offered something better, that is really not cool.

I work for the State and have heard PFL won't apply for us. My job also does not pay into Disability.

Re: Paid Parental Leave

It doesn’t apply to UFT employees.

The union is in talks with the city to include it in our next contract. The city proposed us giving back 2 CAR days a year. I don’t think that’s going to fly.

It does not apply to NYC DOE as it has not been negotiated into our contract yet.

The UFT just texted saying we should all send an email to the mayor about this issue. Hopefully many send emails and something comes about.

read the first two or three responses but they're not correct. that is the NYS paid leave law. NYC runs separate. Right now in the DOE, you get 6 weeks paid with your CAR days. If you don't have enough CAR days to take you into the summer, then you can borrow up to 20. Since you're due June 1, if you have enough of your sick days to get you through to the end of the school year, you will be able to just stay out and then get paid through the summer.

our contract runs up after this year, and there are talks to start a paid program similar to the one NYS is offering, but nothing is official yet.

Newest discussion is removing one day from our Feb break, which i think is more reasonable. That's what my union rep told us at our last meeting
