How much should be given as a gift for a sweet 16? DD is in 9th grade and its a friend of a friend (I never met the bday girl). Apparently she invited everyone and its a 5 hour party at a country club on LI we live in queens

Re: How much?
My daughter has been to 6 sweet 16's in the last 4 minths. I give $60. Honestly its all i can afford. She gets a new dress for almost every party and her nails done. Who knew the new tbing is the girls make their guests wear a certain color. So i have had to buy a black dress. Red dress. White dress. Blue dress so far. It costs me $200 everutime she goes. Its ridiculous.

Re: How much?
Ridiculous. I feel like if there is any kind of dress code to an event that causes you to have to go out and spend money (certain color dress, black tie where the guy has to rent a tux) the amount you spend on that nonsense should be deducted from the gift. Annoying

How much?
I remember having weekends where I had 3 of them (fri, sat and sun). I got lucky that my birthday is in January so I was one of the first to turn 16 and just gave back whatever each person had given me. I think $50 was pretty standard back then in 2001.
There was none of this dress nonsense, but I do remember not rewearing the same dress to parties that would have the same groups of people and since most were from school I ended up getting a lot of $20 forever 21 polyester numbers!

Seriously!
And, EVERYONE I know thinks this is ridiculous, so why is it still a "thing"?! Why can't the parents just say NO we are not doing that, or YOU are not having a Sweet 16?

I just don't get what happened to parental control. Like you are the parent, you are paying for it, why are you letting your kid rule you? I almost feel like a lot of these parents never grew up and are living vicariously through their kids to be honest

Re: How much?
My coworker has a teenage daughter who is in the popular crowd. She has had several sweet 16s already where she is in the "court". This is the equivalent to being a bridesmaid. All of the girls must buy and wear the same dress and shoes. They have big entrances like at a wedding and take professional photos. It's pretty much a wedding. I am SO glad this was not a thing when I was a teenager.

If DD ever asked for something like this, after I finally caught my breath from laughing so hard for several minutes, I wouldn't hesitate in saying absolutely no way!
