Spinoff to plastic bags post
Do you return your bottles to get back your bottle deposit or do you just recycle them? We recycle.

My kids are young and it's hard enough to get thru each food shopping trip with them, so for now I just recycle since i don't have time to return them.

We just recycle them but we don't buy much that come with a deposit so it wouldn't really be worth it.

we bring them back to the store. My kids love to put them in the machine. When they are done I let them keep the $$

We used to return them for the money but DH got fed up. The machines at our store were ALWAYS broken and filthy.
And then they give you vouchers that they don't accept at self check out and we only do self check out so we'd never cash them in.
We decided it wasn't worth the 5 cents per can and just started putting them in the recycle can at the curb

This. We liked the idea of setting a good example for the kids by recycling. However, we now just put them in the recycling bin due to the filth of both the machines themselves and the recycling areas, as well as the shady people who hang around that part of the store.

My mom used to do it. Takes time and LOTS of patience because those machines s*ck!! They are always broken/breaking down/jamming/full. Plus the room they are in smell AWFUL.
She's given up. Now we all just recycle them.

By me, they have bottle and can redemption places where you bring them bagged and counted and they give you the money for them. You technically don't even need to count them cause they'll do it for you, but it makes the process faster.

I return them to the store. I go about once a month. I hate doing it and I hate being anywhere near those machines, but I refuse to throw away my money.

We go through A LOT of bottles, like an obscene amount that is not normal (we buy bottled water and drinks by the case). So much so that it would probably make sense for us to return them and get the deposit back because we drop a lot of money on the deposit each shopping trip but just passing by the bottle return area at most stores is enough to make me want to pass out from the filthy stench. I can't imagine having to actually stand there breathing it all in with my truckload of empty bottles.

We try to only buy recyclables at Trader Joe's, where you can just hand your bag of empties to the person at customer service and say, "I have 25" and they hand you the change.

I recycle EVERYTHING. We have single stream recycling which is great so I put out all of my boxes, bags, cans, bottles, etc.

I recycle. I returned empty bottles couple of times at Costco and meant to cash when I was done with shopping but forgot after shopping. I feel like it’s too much work so I don’t do it anymore.

I started buying more gallons of water than individual bottles. Then I just fill up our water bottles that are re-usable. That definitely saves on the deposit we never get back

I return them to the store ... I actually enjoy doing it but the machines I go to are clean, not smelly. DH & I started doing it in college when we needed the cash & the habit stuck. It's easy money (even though it's not much... I used to keep track & it would get us back about $50 a year).

Or is that only in the city and I've been sorting recyclables for no reason?

The OP was asking about recycling vs returning for the deposit which is just another path to recycling. I know my town gives a summons if they see you putting recyclables in the trash.

We recycle on the curb. When I lived in Queens, someone would come by with their shopping cart and take the cans/bottles from the bins to get the deposit back. More power to them, it's not worth it to me.
