Another holiday gift giving question
Hi All, I am so confused at who I need to give holiday gifts to. Here are the people I am trying to figure out:
DD1- DD1 goes to two different preschools. One in the AM and one in the PM. AM- 1 teacher, 1 assistant teacher, 1 aid PM- 1 teacher, 2 assistant teachers
She also has a therapist that comes to the house 2 nights a week. She does Yoga/gymnastics combo and horseback riding. Do I need to give gifts to them as well?
DD2- DD2 goes to daycare. She has an AM lead teacher and a PM lead teacher. There are also 2 assistant teachers who rotate days and rooms. There are a total of 6 assistant teachers. Who do I give gifts to there?

Give who you're comfortable giving. I'd probably give something small to everyone...maybe not the rotating teachers. I give my children's head and assistant teachers, but not the floaters. There are just too many.

Re: Another holiday gift giving question
Thanks. It was actually made clear to me on Friday when DD came home from her am program with an envelope with 8 tags on it of people to provide gifts for. Lead teacher, assistant teacher, aid, PE, art, music and drama, social worker, learning specialist. DD doesn’t even work with some of these people and she is in a half day program! I just threw some money in there and said divide as you see fit. Totally ridiculous.

That's crazy! I'm sure some parents find it helpful but it's just so presumptuous. I can't believe administrators allow that sort of thing. I've given a range of gifts or GCs depending on how good a job someone does. Some of my kids' therapists have been such a hassle I didn't even bother with anything. Others I've done a GC with a little chocolate or put together a little basket. I just base it on how many I have to shop for that year, how much I appreciate the person, what my budget is, etc.

I can't believe a school would send home something like this, so distasteful. I wouldn't feel pressured into giving to all of those people. It's crazy when parents are spending more on gifts for paid professionals than on their own family members. It would be really refreshing to instead get a memo home saying 'rather than sending in holiday gifts, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.'

There are PE teachers, art teachers and drama teachers in PRE SCHOOL? Pre schoolers don't need a drama teacher they do just fine with the drama on their own!!

And what is a learning specialist? Isn't a teacher a "learning specialist?" That is out of control. And very ballsy to send something home like that when you are PAYING for this school and I am sure you are paying well. Balls.

it sounds like she might go to the town's "Special needs" preschool in the mornings? in which case, the kids get all the specials like the older kids do. and the learning specialist is like a case manager for the kid's IEPs and everything. (basically a teacher who got an extra certification...) but YES- VERY ballsy of the school!!!

I agree with others who said sending those envelopes is presumptuous. I’d fill the envelopes of those who work with your DD and toss the ones who she doesn’t.
They probably just gave all those envelopes to everyone in the program without considering who sees who.

I agree with this. Just give to those who Work with DD and toss the other tags. It's pretty ballsy to assume that parents are going to give gifts. I mean, of course they are, but what about those that are paying so much for the preschool and can't afford to give anything. It would make them feel bad for not being able to give.

She goes to a Montessori school that is ages 12 months- grade 8. So the PE teacher for example isn't built in until elementary 1 which is 1st grade. Because the PE teacher does do enrichment with children who enroll into fitness at her age they put his name on all the envelopes. Same with Drama.
The learning specialist is someone who basically adapts the curriculum/method for children with learning challenges and also is a resource for parents who are seeking therapeutic services for their children.
I have to say, for the first time I was so embarrassed for them... And the teachers. I know some find it easier to just give money, but not like that!

It was one envelop with a bunch of stickers on it. One sticker for each teacher's name. I didn't even fill it in because I thought it was so rude. I just threw money in there with a note to distribute as they saw fit. Looking back, it's not one of my proudest moments, but I was just so disgusted at the time. On a positive note, it saved me time thinking about it and I was no longer confused!
