Anxiety and eating
For those that have anxiety, do you have trouble eating?
I’m going through a really rough divorce, and when something comes in from my lawyer or something else, I simply can’t eat. I also have a whole bunch of other stuff going on (illness in family, work situation, my own panic attacks).
I have tried medication, but the side effects made it worse and my body feels better without it.
I just want to eat and I can’t. I watch cooking shows and buy the food, but when I’m done cooking, I only take a few bites. I did just scarf down a whole bowl of penne alla vodka just now, so that’s good. I try to add as much butter, oil, cream as possible, so that I get enough calories, but it’s frustrating. I also make sure to take vitamins.
So any other people suffering from anxiety have this problem?

Re: Anxiety and eating
So I was always an emotional eater.. if I was sad, I ate, happy, I ate, etc etc. Until my divorce! I became exactly what you described, anxious and couldn't eat for days. What helped me was working out, it helped with my anxiety and also forced me to eat because I was hungry for exerting myself.
Sending you good vibes, take care of yourself!!

Anxiety and eating
When I go through spates like that, I can't eat. I try to take in as much calories as possible by drinking. I'll drink peanut butter smoothies or even stick a straw in yogurt. I'm sorry you're going through this. You'll get through it!

Anxiety and eating
I'm sorry you are going through a hard time. I suffer from anxiety . but I have to say I can usually always eat. The only time I couldn't was when my fiance dumped me 11 days before our wedding back in '09....I just could not get anything down for weeks, never experienced anything like that before, it was horrible. I was on the vodka and cigarettes diet, which got me to the lowest weight I ever was in my adult life , but not very healthy! My best advice is to just try to eat high calories when you can get something down....milkshakes, smoothies with nut butters mixed in, avocados....whatever you can get down at this point. It will get better eventually!

Re: Anxiety and eating
I don't have anxiety. Just wanted to offer up, what if you tried to eat smaller bites more frequently, like grazing, rather than trying to eat a whole meal at once ? More comforting and easier to digest foods like pasta, mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, soups ?

Thank you everyone!
I do try grazing. I leave it on the counter and take bites here and there. Soups and soft foods work well for me. I think I will just start doing that more. However, there are just days when I don’t want to eat. I’ve lost 30 lbs and I’m down to my college weight. It’s fun to use all my skinny clothes, but I’d like to do it in a better way.
I try to exercise with extra walking. I can easily walk 5 kilometers a day. If I’m feeling too anxious to get on public transport or drive, I just walk. But it’s getting cold now, and I find myself cold all the time nowadays.
I do know when I get an urge to eat, I make sure I take it all in. If I want some comfort food, I go and get it. But I’ll order the burger and I can only eat half of it. The server always asks if everything was OK, and I just say I can’t eat that much.
I have no problem with wine or beer, lol, but I know I can’t get all my calories from this.
I’ve had this before with stress from moving, but it ended really quickly. This has been going on since February. I’ve been checked by a doctor, so it’s not anything serious.

That’s rough about your FI. Sorry that happened to you.
If anyone wants to lose a ton of weight, break up or get a divorce. It was also the best revenge when I saw my ex at a therapy session (we tried this to divorce peacefully, which is not happening; he’s now suing me for something else— ah don’t marry/divorce a lawyer). He was so concerned and talked to the counsellor afterwards about my weight loss.

Anxiety and eating
Yes! I suffer from a pretty intense anxiety disorder and at my lowest point I lost 40lbs in 3 month due to the lack of appetite from the horrible stuff I was going through at the time. It was only until I got a grip on my disorder that I was able to eat normally again. My doctor described it this way... you feel out of control of your own life, but the one thing you can control is your eating. Which is why we make the decision to not eat or convince ourselves we are not hungry.
I agree with some of the other responses... do your best to just graze to keep calories coming in. It will start to effect other parts of your body if you don't get a grip on it. Feel free to FM as I have more experience in this than I care to admit. :(

I have this problem. When I was going through my divorce I looked like an Olsen twin. Have you tried protein shakes?

No, I have not tried protein shakes. Is there a powder? I’m not really interested in powders, but I’d rather have real ingredients. I’ll take any recipes with fruit and yogurt to make a shake. I tend to eat just meat and veggies when I can eat. When I have the craving, I eat comfort food, but that only happens about once a month.
And lol about the Olsen twin comment (I mean it’s not really that funny, but I get you). I’ve had too many comments about my weight, and it’s really starting to annoy me. I’m down to 115 lbs, and I’d like to put on another 5 and shape up. I was 145 before. I avoid the scale because I don’t want to start weighing myself every day.

Re: Anxiety and eating
Don’t know if it’s legal where you are, but have you tried marijuana ? That’s definitely one way to kick start your appetite.
If you can’t take meds for your anxiety (there are so many on the market and it sometimes takes a lot of tries until you find the right fit) maybe try acupuncture, meditation, yoga or all of them in combo. Anxiety is a tough one.
In the meantime, the idea of grazing and smoothies is a good way to get your calories in and keep you healthy while you get it sorted out.
I hope you start feeling like yourself soon.

They don’t sell marijuana here, but you can carry a certain amount legally. SWIM (someone who isn’t me) did try that a few months ago and it worked. It could possibly be an answer, though.
I just want to do it normally, if that makes sense. The last think I need is an addiction.

A lot of studies on whether MJ is really addictive. Though I understand wanting to do it normally. I would say naturally but Mj is natural! Lol so it’s more you want it to happen organically.
Sometimes just forcing yourself to eat at first will eventually spark your appetite. Also maybe try foods that are known to make you hungry - carbs, or sugary food.
Last year I had a stomach issue and I couldn’t eat more than broth a crackers for weeks. Once I was feeling better, I just wasn’t hungry at all. After talking to my dr., we came to the conclusion that I needed to eat in order to reprogram myself. Maybe try that.

Re: Anxiety and eating
I lost a lot of weight when I hit a rough patch in my marriage. It came out naturally. I don't remember how much I was eating because it was a long time ago, but I remember that I was the skinniest I've been in my life. That was one of the only good things around that time in my life, though. I have to say that I gained all of it back and maybe more. Even now looking at what I eat and working out, I can't get rid of it.... I blame it on the age.
All of this to say that hopefully it will go away soon. You are in the middle of many changes, but when things settle down, you will feel better, your anxiety will lessen, and you might start eating more.
