Echo Dot

Can someone explain what you can do with this? It is so reasonably priced but what is the point of it?

I have the Show so it's a little more interactive with the screen and all but it's the same idea.

You can ask it to play music from Amazon music or Amazon prime music.

You can ask it for the weather if you need to know real quick before running out the door

You can ask it for news, sports scores, etc

You can ask it to reorder you stuff you normally buy from your amazon account.

You can play games on it

We have it hooked to our thermostat (not the Nest but another smart capable one) so I can ask it to raise or lower the heat without getting off the couch.

I am sure there is a lot more you can do but thats what i use it for now. I need to take time to sit down and learn more about it's capabilities

We have the Dot in our kitchen. We use it for music, news, weather. And my son asks her the phases of the moon.

I pretty much use it all day long. I have it play music anytime I’m in my kitchen.. also use it for a timer if I’m cooking (or want my DS to move his butt ). We also ask it the time... weather... once asked it when/where a movie was playing locally...... to convert measurements in a recipe.....sometimes for fun we just talk to it and ask it what if’s favorite movie is, or for a good joke Alexa is basically an honorary member of our family.

Echo Dot

Is the dot just an add on for a second location? I assumed you needed an echo first.

We have the echo and mostly just use it for music. My 3yo is obsessed with her songs. Sometimes I use it for a timer but I rarely ask it questions bc she never has answers for me. My house is not big enough to need a second lol.

Lol. Alexa is just the name you use to ask it things. Its the name on all the Amazon devices. There are several kinds all with different features. You can see them all on Amazon and compare.
The dot is the smallest and cheapest. And you don't need anything else except a wifi connection to use it.

Echo Dot

I use it to control our lights. We have smart bulbs and smart plugs connected to it (TP Link brand and Kasa is the main app for those, which connects to Amazon Echo). I love being able to just say "Alexa, turn on the Christmas tree", Alexa turn off my light, etc. You can also control the lights and put them on a timer from the Kasa app. Our outside Christmas lights are plugged into smart plugs in the garage and set on a timer, it's great! I believe you can get a smart plug for $5 if you buy a Dot right now through Amazon. We have the regular Echo, which has really nice sound, and the Echo dot in my DD's room, and the sound is just okay on that. Definitely not loud enough to play throughout your house like the Echo.

We have one Echo and 2 Dots.

My DH has largely made our house a smart home so we literally use it for everything:

-Play music
-Set timers
-Add to shopping list
-Ask for measurement equivalents when cooking
-Turn on lights
-Turn on Christmas tree
-Turn on TV
-Turn on our ductless split AC

For some reason my DH has not set up our thermostat to to it yet.

When I travel, I frequently find myself wanting to have "Alexa" do something for me. LOL

two things i use it a lot for:
- we can "drop in" to dots in other rooms so I can tell my kids to come upstairs or be quiet
- set numerous timers when cooking
- mashed potato timer for 30 minutes
- chicken timer for 50 minutes
