What does your child do in their pre k class each day?
I'm interested in knowing mostly what kids that are transitioning into kindergarten next year are doing in preschool but also interested what kids do in 3 year old preschool classes also. Thanks!
ETA: what do you think is important for them to know going into kindergarten?

Preschool is twice a week for 3ish hours, and it's mainly play based. They sing songs, do the weather, art projects, snack, circle time.

Usually free play until everyone is in. Circle time, sing songs, attanedance (they find their names etc) read a book to go along with their unit, do a project along with unit/book, have snack, lunch, outside play, nap (my dd goes 8:30-2 in the 4’s so they have “rest” time. Some kid sleave at this time). More free time, outside time. And some special, gym, music, Spanish, art. Inthe 4’s they called over more than he 3’s to practice writing their names, cutting, whatever the assess for “report” cards. Similar in 3’s but a shorter day and less “intense”.

Same here for my 3yo. They also focus on a letter a week mainly through crafts and projects. I assume they will start learning to write their names later in the year which is what dd1 did in her 3s class.
Last year in Prek (5 half days) they did a letter a week, writing, cutting, calender, different themes like habitats and stuff like that. Lots of center time which included free play, learning games like counting and sorting, legos, sensory bins, etc. They also had library, outdoor play, yoga.

When my ds was in PreK (5 days a week for full days) they learned letters sight words, writing, math. It’s everything he does in K now but just not as in depth.

Re: What does your child do in their pre k class each day?
My daughter is in 3 y/o preschool. She goes for 4 hours, 4 days a week. They have free play, circle time (days of week, months of year, weather, etc.), read alouds, play outside if above 40*, letters and sounds, handwriting for the letters taught and their names, projects for letter of the week, monthly themes/holidays, and concepts taught (primary and secondary colors, etc), music and movement, etc.
She has learned so much and most importantly, LOVES going. She recognizes many letters and tells me what sound they make. If she sees a random letter on a sign or something that is the first letter of one of her classmates' names, she will say, "Hey, that's G like in Gianna and Gregory." Kids are like little sponges at this age. It's amazing to watch.

Re: What does your child do in their pre k class each day?
My DS is in pre k and they’re doing a kindergarten curriculum, pretty much.. but more basic. The teacher told us what’s expected now in kindergarten used to not be expected till 2nd grade! It’s a Montessori school though, so everything that’s done is very child led.

Re: What does your child do in their pre k class each day?
Going into kindergarten now I think it is important for a child to know the following in order to assist with an easy transition period for them ID capital and lower case letters letter sounds ID numbers 1-10 and potentially 1-20 ID colors ID shapes ID their first and last name write their first and last name coloring cutting and scissor grip

Yep... we sent ours to a Montessori school and in a half day program, my DD did much more last year than she has done in K so far this year. She did number chart to 100, was reading fluently and writing words and early sentences. They covered addition and subtraction. She was just ready for it. Other kids her age did not get there.
That said, most schools in my area that I visited said they did teach letters but not reading and that was for kindergarten.

My dd has the same curriculum and some hours as niece. It’s pretty much a watered down kindergarten. She is expected to know at least 20 site words by end of school year too.

My son is in half day PreK 5 days per week (through the district). They do a different letter each week, learn how to draw it, what sound it makes, what words start with that letter. They bring home a craft referring to that letter. They do numbers, counting, putting things in order. They have learned sizes -- small, big, biggest -- stuff like that. They also color, trace their names, cut, and paste. They have "centers" where they can play and also white board time where they read stories, sing songs, and dance. They also do the standard morning routine -- weather, day of the week, etc. They pretty much did the same thing in a little less depth when he was in a 3 year old nursery program. I think there they had more crafts, more free play -- but they still did the letters, numbers, colors, etc.

My little guy was in Pre-k last year, 5 days a week 9:20-3:20. They did identifying and writing upper and lower case letters, writing first and last name, basic math, sight words, lots of crafts, centers and spanish.
It was basically slightly less than Kindergarten. My daughter is a few years older. There seems to be more emphasis on reading and writing now, and using both upper and lower case letters. They focused much more on upper case with her.
