Electrician WWYD
I had 2 licensed electricians do estimates for ceiling lights
Have to be licensed for co-op
One i found from seeing his truck in my area the other was friend of a friend
The local guy is in business 30 years quoted me $1300
The other guy is in it maybe 10 years (since 16 yo) his partner died and he took over his license said 600$
Why such a huge difference?!
Would you get a 3rd quote or go with cheaper guy? I got a good feeling from both just want job done right

Re: Electrician WWYD
Did they give you a written, itemized estimate, or did they just look at your room and give you a number?
The time/cost to wire lights can vary tremendously, depending on the layout of your house and the lights. Often (but not always), the cheapest estimate winds up costing the most because they underestimated the amount, and wind up charging you more for "unforeseen expenses".

Re: Electrician WWYD
When I was an Electrician, The going rate was around $200 for a new circuit (if needed), and around 75-100 per High Hat. Also depended if There was an attic above or if it was a bottom floor(more labor). So an average room with new switch and circuit with say 4 High Hats is about 500-700 depending on location..

The cheaper guy wrote it out.
Both charged per high hat but the difference was the price was double per hh with the more experienced guy. The cheaper guy has a full time job and does this on side. The more expensive its his full time job has a truck with his name etc

Re: Electrician WWYD
My dh is an electrician. I'm pretty sure you can't "take over a license". It's an very involved process to get a license. You can work under someones license, but the person who has it has to sign off on the work. I'd be weary if he said he "took it over" and does not have his own.
Like the previous poster said it depends on if there is an attic above or not. Among other things. $1300 doesn't sound outrageous depending on how many lights? Did that include the fixtures?

My magic number is usually at least 3.
Call in for a new estimate and take it from there.
I've had plumbers and tile installers be thousands off. Some charge more for labor than others also.

Get another estimate. My dad is an electrician and you can't take over someone's license. You have to take the test and pass it yourself.
