Earring Question- Updated with new question
ETA- Can they be 14K gold plated do you think? Or do they need to be solid gold?
So DD got her ears pierced a few weeks ago.
She is asking for earrings for Christmas- since by then she will be able to remove the ones they used to pierce them with.
My question is- do I need to buy gold? Is silver ok?
I don't have my ears pierced so I am kind of clueless. I know for some people they can only wear gold, or they get a reaction etc.
What kind of earrings do your DD's wear?
She wants unicorn and emoji earrings so it's not like she is looking for diamond studs or anything good quality.
I just don't want to buy these cheap earrings she wants if they will cause an issue.
Any kind of metal I should be looking for or avoiding?

Earring Question
I get a lot of nice earrings at Kohl's, but they aren't "fashion" type, trending earrings. Usually studs or super small rhinestone hoops (these are so pretty there! and like $30 for a set of three with a coupon). I buy the gold ones (white), or sterling and we haven't had issues (we both have sensitive ears and can't wear anything with nickel). The sensitive ears , nickel free ones from Claire's also work well also!

Ok thanks! I saw a pair of unicorn ones LOL and they were sterling and said nickel free. So maybe that will work. I just dont' need any issues since she just got pierced.

I did buy a pair of nickel free ones from Dress Barn for myself....and they were NOT nickel free! So just beware, sometimes they lie! I can usually tell after a few minutes of putting them in though, so tell your DD if her ears start itching or burning, or start to feel warm, to take them out asap!

Earring Question
I suggest going with gold earrings. I always had reactions to fake earrings and it isn't worth it for your DD to potentially have any issues. I wouldn't know where to look for emoji or unicorn earrings in gold but I'm sure they're out there somewhere!

Re: Earring Question
I got DD's ears pierced at a jeweler, and she recommended 14k only for at least a year.

I am sure I can google and find something. If not, I will get her good studs and tell her she has to wait on the cheapy stuff for at least a year and then see how she reacts.

Re: Earring Question
My jeweler recommends sticking to gold for a year or two after piercing, and then if you do silver, to really keep a close eye on them for a reaction. I just stick with gold for now.

I agree. My DD has had her ears pierced for 3 years now and I just let her start wearing the cheapie earrings.

Re: Earring Question
Thank you ladies, I will stick with gold for sure. The last thing we need is an issue.
I found some 14k unicorn earrings when i googled, so I think we should be good!

Re: Earring Question
I'm one of those "I can only wear gold or silver" people; if I wear cheapo earrings, my ears itch. I haven't experimented with my daughters yet, so I buy gold or silver for them. Small hoops seem to stay in better than studs (my 7 year-old likes to play with the backings).
FWIW you can get emojis, flowers, characters, etc in gold or silver.

Earring Question
Piercing pagoda may have the unicorns and emojis in gold. I have very sensitive ears so I make sure dd’s earrings are always gold.

Earring Question
I don't know if they're good, but I've seen plastic sleeves for earrings.

Re: Earring Question- Updated with new question
Do you think they can be 14K gold plated? Or do they need to be solid 14k?

Re: Earring Question- Updated with new question
Depends on how sensitive her ears are.
Plating can and will start to wear off. Then her ear will be exposed to the cheaper alloy underneath the plating.
Personally, I would stick with all gold... but I've found that my kid has *ridiculously* sensitive ears/skin.

Re: Earring Question- Updated with new question
OK thanks. I saw a bunch that were gold plated so I wasn't sure. This is all new to me since she just got them done and is still wearing the studs they pierced them with. So I have no idea how sensitive she will be
