What happens if you just don't go.
I have gotten the letter for jury duty and just keep fogetting to mail it back.
How do they even know you go it?? what stops me from saying I never received it? Which could be a good possibility. They can't proof I did or didn't get it.
This was not Grand Jury, but my MIL kept throwing out the jury duty notices for my SIL (she got married, changed her name and moved to Queens). After a year or so, there was a warrant out for my SIL's arrest. She had to go to court with her marriage license and all sorts of proof that she didn't live in Suffolk. A couple weeks ago she got a notice again at my MIL's house (with her maiden name) for Federal jury duty, this time she wrote on it "No such person at this address" and mailed it back.
The thing is- they can't PROVE that you got it unless they send it registered mail/signature required etc. So how could that even hold up in court if they put out a warrant for your arrest? What if your mail got stolen? What if your mail got delivered to the wrong address? What if it blew away? There are too many what ifs. They should be sending this shitt signature required if they want to make a case out of it.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
I had it last spring. It was M-Th 8:30-4:30 for 3 weeks. There were some days during that 3 weeks that we didn't have to go. My grand jury duty, however, was unique since I only had one case with like 200+ intentional indictments.

The courts consider regular mail significant service for a bunch of different things. This being one of them. Especially when they send it to the last known address and don't get anything back. They put out the warrant and when you come in you need to explain why you didn't get the mailing. So if it is still your address they don't really believe you didn't receive 5 or 6 letters. One.. you could get away with saying you didn't receive it but that is why they send a few before they put out the warrant.

Makes sense. I usually limiting my dumping of questionnaires to about 2-3. I fill it out on the 3rd letter they send It's really just a delay tactic but I like to delay the pain for as long as possible!

The thing is, I don't think you have a choice on the location. Everyone's name goes into the big bingo thing and they just call randomly. You could live in Shirley and get called to Hauppauge.
You do have a choice. i was on grand jury duty a few years again. I reported to riverhead where we were told of our location options. I was able to elect to have my name put in the bingo bin for hauppage. They asked for volunteers. My name was called and I served.
I served every Wednesday and Friday from April-June. They weren’t full days. Some days we had a quick 10 min case and other days there were 4 cases tops.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
I also Loved Grand Jury. Got some interesting cases. I got Central Islip. My job also paid me so I was lucky. We would go and sometimes we were dismissed early for the day. It was not a bad thing to have off from my job for a month.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
Two days a week for 3 months. It was really interesting though. I served in Brooklyn, not LI, so we dealt with a lot of drug smuggling cases from the airports. Also, we almost never served a full day. I was usually home by 3 PM where I usually worked til 5.
There's almost no way out of it though, since you can miss a day or two and then go back.
ETA: They did pay us, not my normal salary, but some type of payment. I don't know how much though because it was years ago, and I also wasn't allowed to accept it since I was paid my full salary from my job.
