Vertigo

Does anyone have Vertigo?

I think I might have it.

A little over a month ago I woke up on a Saturday so dizzy that I couldn't walk straight. I had to lay in bed for a few hours until it subsided. For the next 2 days I was a little off but not like I was on the Saturday.

About 2 weeks ago, I woke up on a Thursday dizzy and nauseous. When I sat up in bed the room was spinning like when you are on the gravitron ride at a carnival. This lasted pretty much the entire day.

Ever since that day I go through these waves of dizziness but nothing as bad as that Thursday.

I am thinking it might be time to go see a doctor but I wanted to see if there was a holistic treatment for it.

Re: Vertigo

DH has it.
He gets episodes now and then- not very often.
Dizzy, the spins, nauseous. He says it feels like his eyes can't focus on anything and are moving uncontrollably.

He is also prone to motion sickness and he can't go on or even LOOK at any rides that spin.

The first time it happened to him he was at work and he went to the ER because he had no idea what was wrong.
They ran a few basic tests and said it was Vertigo and gave him antivert- which is the prescription name for Bonnine.

They believe it was related to his inner ear but they really didn't do much for him other than to say that when it acts up to take the Bonnine.

Luckily his episodes haven't been all that often anymore, but when they come on, or he feels them coming on, it's awful.
He always has Bonnine in the house

I don't, but my mom does and two friends. It definitely sounds like Vertigo. Definitely go see an ENT to rule out any inner ear issues. There are no holistic treatments I'm aware of, but maybe someone else on here knows some. But the medication doesn't really help according to 3 people I know with it, so not sure if any holistic treatments would help. From my understanding it sucks, and once you have it, you always will.

Re: Vertigo

Yes! A little over a year ago I woke up so dizzy that I had to make my way to the toilet and threw up. I laid in bed most of the day and could mostly only look to the left.
I had it for about a year on and off. I learned to control it. Worst was when I'd blowdry my hair. Also, laying flat was bad. My friend, who's a PT, came over and helped do an adjustment.
Now I'm pretty much fine. If I feel it come on I put my head strait looking forward then (while my head is straight) look to the left then right and center and that usually helps it subside.
Funny thing is I went on a cruise a few months after my first episode and was totally fine. LOL

ETA - I did go to a doctor who gave me meds, but only took it once and didn't do much. Only thing that helps is to do some adjustments and watch some youtube videos. It will get better. Just try and control it.

I get it every so often (I know it's ear related), but this trick takes care of it right away! I swear by it! I saw it a couple of years ago, and tell everyone I know to try it if they get vertigo! Some people immediately dismiss it, saying they will get even more dizzy, but definitely worth a try!

Re: Vertigo

Like a PP has said, go see an ENT to check your inner ear. In the meantime, go get some bonine. That helps by drying out anything in there. My FIL gets it really bad. He takes that and he started seeing a physical therapist that specializes in exercises that help with vertigo.
IfIf you want the drs. name, I'll ask him for you. That would be the only holistic way of treating it. But just be sure it isn't something that an ENT may need to deal with first.

Edited because I had the wrong OTC meds listed here

I get it often. Most times it is related to low blood pressure, especially if it happens when you get up from sitting or lying down.

Also, if you've started any new medication lately, it could be related.

Re: Vertigo

I have it, and it sounds like what you are describing. I always say I feel drunk/hungover bc I get the spins and get nauseous. My first time getting it was 2011 and it was the worst “episode” I’ve had. They gave me some medicine that starts with an M and it made me so sleepy that I would pass out (2 small kids at home, not a good mix lol) but it did help when my DH was Home and I could take it. I luckily haven’t gotten it that bad since, but if I feel it coming on, I stop what I’m doing and lay down on my right side (no clue why that side works better for me) I close my eyes for 15 mins and then I am fine. I would definitely try different things till you figure out what works best for you, I’ve tried a bunch that others swear by, not laying down is the only things that works for me.

I had it a few months ago and went to the doctor. She told me to do this - the Epley Manuever. It took a few days of doing it, but it worked (the last day I did it, it made the vertigo so bad that I was nauseous, but it was so much better the next day)

It was probably Meclizine that they gave you.
They gave that to DH.
If you google it, you will see that it's the same as Bonine OTC
And yes, it makes you tired because it's an antihistamine actually.
Like when you take Dramamine- very sedating to some people.

Re: Vertigo

As a few pp mentioned, there are specially trained PTs that treat this; there is an excellent program at Peak Performance in New Hyde Park. They are vestibular therapists (I am also certified but haven't practiced in god knows how many years).

There are many different causes of vertigo, so finding out the exact cause will determine the most effective treatment.

An ENT can give you a referral for PT.

Best of luck, feel better, fm me if you have questions.

I've had it since I was a teenager. In my 20s I took Meclizine almost every day. It happens much less frequently now, but it still happens once every few months.

I have a history of it. I have gotten it in May usually. I was on meclizinine for it. No drivining. I went to neurologist who recommended a head movement to the the left, right and center.

Try this maneuver it worked for me. I got vertigo in 2013 after scuba diving. They believed it had to do with my ears. I tried this maneuver and it helped me a lot after a few times.

Re: Vertigo

I had the same symptoms for two weeks straight. Went to the Dr...had blood work..everything was fine.

The Dr said it was vestibular neuritis - which is basically a viral inner ear infection. Nothing to do but rest (which was fine because I was so fatigued I didn't want to do anything!).

Feel better!

Vertigo

Go to the doctor to make sure you don't have an infection. I had 2 vertigo attacks and they were bad. Once lasted a week or so an another lasted well over a month. I could not stand, could not drive, was constantly dizzy. It was the worst thing I have experienced. Medicine did not help. I started going to a chiropractor and it started going away. Every single morning I wake up and hope it doesn't happen again.

Re: Vertigo

I will have a few days when I am sitting at work and I feel like I am on a cruise ship.

I have been bed ridden twice. Even laying down didn't help much.

I have not seen anyone about it.

But wondering now if I should
