Would you get genetic testing for Parkinsons?
The Michael J Fox foundation is looking for volunteers of Ashkenazi (eastern European) Jewish descent to study Parkinson's and a genetic mutation.
Would you participate? My uncle had Parkinson's and we are of eastern European Jewish ancestry. I'm on the fence about participating.

no, my mother dad had it. I really dont want to know. It would stress me.

Is there anything you can do to prevent it if they find out that you have the gene?
If not, I am not sure I'd want to live my life waiting for that shoe to drop.
I'd probably rather not know unless of course there was something they could do to prevent it ahead of time

Hmmm. I'm usually all for that kind of stuff. But being in the medical field and knowing about Parkinson's I'm not sure if I would. I think I would participate to help research, but wouldn't want to know my fate.

No...but I don't believe it's genetic. I think there is a heavy link between parkinsons and diet soda (aspartame), along with smoking.

Interesting mix of replies!!
I have a friend who's family has been inundated by ALS (Lou Gerig Dz). I wonder if her family is in any studies. I will ask her.
I'm leaning towards not participating at this point.

I would. I believe that only by continued research will we be able to improve treatment and hopefully cure diseases.

Yes I would. I have a coworker who is dying from this now. And he didn't smoke or drink diet coke as a previous poster stated.

I would. I also have a family member (through marriage) who is dying from this. It is a terrible disease. As unsettling as it would be, I would want to know so I could get my things in order and have a plan for how to handle the progression.
ETA- He also never smoked or drank diet anything. He was one of the healthiest, most active people I ever knew before he got sick. His father also had it and died from it.
