6 day school schedule

DD's elementary school switched to a 6 day schedule this year and looking at things i do not like it. Some weeks she wont have art and others she only will have PE once. I am thinking about complaining.

Does anyone elses school have this type of schedule and do you like it?

Thanks

We have that type of schedule. They do it so they ensure fairness (a certain number of days of gym, art and music in a 6 day period even if there are holidays and days off).

Are you in NY? How do they get away with that being that it's mandated to have physical education at least 3 times per week in elementary school?

Many schools skirt the requirement by doing "warm up" type exercises in the classroom. K-2 is required to have some sort of physical education each day. In our K-2 school, when it was discovered they weren't compliant, they had the kids doing dancing type exercises during morning announcements and regular gym class was twice a week. Grades 3-5 is at least 3 times per week. We actually have gym 3 times a week at this level (5th grade).

That's interesting. DD is in 2nd now and has always had gym 3 days per week- but never ever single day.

6 day school schedule

Last year when my DD was in Kindergarten, she had PE once a week. Now this year in 1st grade she has it twice a week. I didn't know it was mandated to be 3 times per week.

I only know all of this because someone in our community group questioned it one year (and was slammed by just about every single person in our community!),so I looked it up. At one point they were having the kids run around the playground uniformly before recess started...to fulfill the requirement. I think a lot of people complained about that though
