Travel to New Orleans next week

DH and I are supposed to fly to New Orleans next Tuesday ( a week from today). Last night, Delta sent us messages saying that they are waiving the fee for changing/cancelling the flight, due to Harvey. Do you think it will be OK to travel there next week? (We are spending a few days in NO and then going to Mississippi for a family event that Friday. If we couldn't spend the time in NO, I'm not sure we would have flown down just to go to the family event for the weekend). Any thoughts on what to do?

ETA: The Delta message says that the impacted dates of travel are 8/25 - 9/7

I would cancel the trip or try to move it so that you visit AFTER the family event instead of before. I mean, it's going to be flooded, you won't be having much fun there. but maybe the time between now and after the event it might be more more manageable??

I would love to do that, but DH can't - he has to be somewhere else right after this trip (he's planning to fly from NO to the other location and I am flying home)

Was NOLA affected by Harvey?
I only see news reports on Texas so I wasn't sure how much they were impacted.

It's expected to get hit with heavy rains from Harvey over the next few days with potential flooding issues Chat Icon

How long do you have to cancel with no penalty?

I don't see anywhere that says when we would have to cancel by. I guess for now we'll just wait a few days and see what happens Chat Icon

I'd cancel. I heard the storm is still bringing rain to the area, New Orleans was mentioned.

Re: Travel to New Orleans next week

Harvey's making a second landfall in Louisiana so I'd cancel.

If you were going to some resort or casino type place where most of your entertainment was indoors it might be different but a big part of NOLA's charm is experienced by walking around the city.

Sorry - it sucks!

Travel to New Orleans next week

Last time I planned a trip to NO was 12 years ago - planned the trip in August, for Oct, right before Katrina hit - so obviously didn't go. I'm thinking the people of NO are going to ask that I don't plan any more trip there!

Did you cancel? I hope not!
I have a FB friend there now and the weather looks fine.
And out of curiosity I looked at the forecast and it looks like beautiful weather all next week.

This is why I tend to wait for the last possible minute before cancelling anything....

Re: Travel to New Orleans next week

I was in NOLA yesterday. Weather was beautiful, everything was fine at the airport. We went on a cruise from there last week. Spent the day on the 26th & it was beautiful. Sailed out on the 27th & it raines but no flooding.

I say don't cancel!!

That is exactly why I never cancel until the last possible minute.
I had a trip to south Florida planned last fall when Hurricane Matthew was on course to hit Florida.
I was THIS close to cancelling. I called the resort the day before and they said I could cancel with no penalty but that they were still taking bookings as the forecast had changed. By the next day the course had in fact changed and it went more north and missed the Miami area. We flew out with no delays and had beautiful weather the whole time we were there
I as SO glad I waited to cancel. Things change so quickly

Yay! So glad you waited to cancel. I always wait until the last possible second to cancel for this very reason. What a shame if you would have cancelled last week and all was well today!
Have an amazing time! NOLA is awesome!
