Drive or Ferry to Hartford CT

has anyone driven to CT VS. take the ferry from Port Jeff to CT?

Would you say it saved a significant amount of time taking the ferry?

We have to go there on Labor Day and I am debating what we should so. Cant really get a clear idea on google as it wont determine ferry time.

Thanks!

It's hard to determine whether or not you'll save time. It really depends on the traffic. If we are driving the whole way, we leave for CT super early in the morning and fly up. The later you leave, the more traffic you'll hit (especially in the Bronx and again by the Bridgeport area).

It's a little over an hour from Port Jeff to Bridgeport on the ferry.

The ferry is a much nicer, relaxing way to go. I wish it weren't so expensive though!!!

I definitely prefer the ferry. It's quick, you don't need to get there super early or anything. I prefer getting to walk around and get a bite to eat than be stuck driving, especially on a holiday weekend. Driving can take similar time depending on how far you are from the ferry. We've only opted for that once bc it was late, our kids were sleeping, and we were nauseous still from an ocean ferry lol.

True, and we live southshore so we have to drive all the way north to even get to the ferry...I am thinking we should just leave early and drive.

I loathe driving around, so we always take the ferry. You couldn't pay me to go around actually. Not worth the traffic on the Cross Island and Throgs Neck lately

Depends on where on the island you live. We live on the Queens/Nassau border- we can be at the Throgs Neck Bridge in 15 minutes. So we always drive- depending on the time you leave, traffic may not be that bad. There have been times were we flew through the Bronx without one bit of traffic.

I think the time is relatively equal (depending on where you live) for taking the ferry vs. driving. However, during the hour long ferry ride, you can walk around, surf the web, take a nap, etc. No stress, no traffic.

Whenever possible, I take the ferry when going to New England.

It really depends on where you are leaving from. We live in western Suffolk. It takes me an hour to get to PJ so it is actually an hour longer (factoring in ferry time) to get to Bridgeport that way. When we head to the Hartford area, we drive.

Re: Drive or Ferry to Hartford CT

Hartford is way inland. You would still have to drive a ton even after taking the ferry. Would be a 4+ hour trip each way.

I'd drive.

I would drive - my ILs live near Hartford and it is pretty far from Bridgeport.

I would drive. Leave early though. I drove on I95 in CT last Saturday at 10:00 AM and there was so much traffic (and in the Bronx).

Re: Drive or Ferry to Hartford CT

It depends on where you're leaving from and when you're leaving. The drive from Hartford to where my family is on the South Shore can easily take under 2.5 hours without traffic. However, construction and traffic can add 1 hour or more onto the trip. We try to travel at off times whenever possible. If we were going further out on the island, I'd consider the ferry, but it makes no sense for where we need to go.

Re: Drive or Ferry to Hartford CT

It depends how far you are from port Jeff and what the ferry schedule is. We're a good 1.25 hrs. from port Jeff but would have to build in at least a half hour cushion on our reservation to account for possible traffic. Or if you don't have a reservation and just miss a Ferry you have to account for waiting for the next one. When we do the math, it's easier to just drive.

after being stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours to get to greenwich yesterday from my house(normally 45 mins to an hour tops), i would absolutely take the ferry.

Depends how far you live from the ferry. We live on South shore of Nassau and always drive when we go up to Boston. It would take at least an hour to get to Port Jeff from us and it's just not worth it.

Granted, traffic really stinks lately - but there are several ways to get up there so you can avoid slowdowns. I NEVER take I-95, its just a constant stream of trucks and traffic and there are always accidents. We usually either go rt 15 to 91, or 684 up to 84.
From us, its probably a 2.5 hour trip to Hartford

Re: Drive or Ferry to Hartford CT

I live South Shore in Western Suffolk and always take the ferry. Everytime I go to Boston, it's on a Friday and not worth all the city traffic, imo. I prefer to take my drive out east and then enjoy the ferry ride instead.

ETA - I take it out of Orient Point, not Port Jeff. Still worth it, imo.
