Health Insurance Between Positions

I am leaving one school district for another and will start at the new district in the fall. I carry the benefits for our family, and I do not receive benefits until November 1st. I just received a letter that my benefits from the old district will terminate on July 31st. Is there anything I can do besides COBRA (which is out of the question financially)? Specifically for my DS? Or do we just have to ride it out until November and pray nothing major happens? Thanks for any info.

I believe that if you lose your job, you can get health insurance through the ACA instead of COBRA - i.e. you can enroll within like 60 days or something of losing your job (not sure the exact amt of time). I would presume that once you start your new job with health insurance you can terminate ACA coverage. You may be able to find a cheaper plan under ACA to tied you over for a few months...

Thanks, I'll look into it! This was a voluntary move though; I was not let go. I wonder if that will make a difference.

When I left one job for another, I had either 59 or 89 days from the day my insurance ended to sign up for COBRA. But no matter when I signed up it would be retroactive to day 1.

The timing worked that my new insurance would start within that window so I went without insurance knowing that if anything major did happen in that time frame, the worst can scenario would be that I would have to activate COBRA and pay the for the full time which wasn't cheap but still would have been a lot less expensive than doctor bills if something had happened.

Not sure if this is an option for you and your family.

Thanks, that would cover all but one month, so at least it's an option worst case scenario.

I went through the same thing. Cobra is a total insult. I ended up letting the insurance lapse. My son had to get a well exam and got sick one time and I just paid out of pocket. It wasn't horrendous

This is exactly what I did though I was able to time it so we only went without for 2 weeks. Cobra would have been nearly $3k for the month.

You need to sign up for COBRA. If you have any medical conditions, you can have trouble getting covered under your new insurance if you had any lapses in coverage.

I just went through this. I left one job and had almost a 2 month wait period for my new insurance to kick in. I had cobra for a month and then for the second month I didn't pay it. They gave you a 30 day extension to may for the next month and if you didn't pay they automatically cancel. I waited it out and figured if something big happened I would pay it but if nothing happened then we are good. I had to bring one of my children to the doctor and just paid out of pocket $75. Much better then the almost $2000 in cobra. I went from one state job to the next and they still wouldn't budge on the wait period. It is the same insurance company and they even kept my account number the same and everything.

This is true. I do think there is a grace period though, maybe 90 days?

Thanks everyone. I do not get paid over the summer, so I do not have the extra $7,000 to pay for COBRA. No medical conditions, but my son does take a medication that will now cost us $375 out of pocket. I'm just going to have to let it ride, and if anything happens during the grace period I'll back pay for COBRA.

We do not have any, but I thought insurance companies can no longer deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions?

You can't be denied total coverage, but you can be denied coverage on certain ailments.
